MediaDefender buys MediaSentry
p2pnet news view Freedom | P2P:-Two of the Net’s scummiest, and most ill-famed, scavenger operations have joined forces.
Disgraced MediaDefender is buying disgraced MediaSentry from the latter’s parent company, SafeNet.
What will the new entity be called?
MediaDefenderSentry?
Whatever it is, the Safenet guys will be laughing all the way to the bank.
MediaDefender, owned by ARTISTdirect, was talked out of parting with close to a million dollars comprising $136,000 in cash and $800,000 in a one year note.
The buy will, “enable MediaDefender to dramatically expand its effectiveness by providing customers with a wide range of options to meet the constantly evolving challenges in copyright protection and enforcement,” says a statement from ARTISTdirect boss Dimitri Villard.
The, “combination of MediaDefender, the leader in Internet Piracy Prevention (IPP) with MediaSentry, the leader in business and marketing intelligence derived from P2P channels, creates a true powerhouse in the field of intellectual property protection.”

MediaDefender boss Randy Saaf and sidekick Octavio Herrera, who watched helplessly as their most sensitive documents ended up online for all to see, recently left the company for pastures new.
Parasitical MediaSentry, in turn, was recently fired by Vivendi Universal, EMI, Warner Music and Sony Music’s RIAA.

This might not be so ridiculous. Perhaps the combination of these two companies will bring out the best in them? Instead of the half-assed attempts to nail file sharers they’ve done in the past, perhaps they’ll pool together their collective talents and get proper evidence this time and nail them properly this time? That should make things interesting.
Just a thought.

@vishnu as long as they are dogs on the *iaa’s leashes nothing will be done properly, all it really boils down to is two groups of thugs joining forces so that they can “enforce” with more man power

This can’t really be done, no matter how talented and competent anyone is.
That fact has been what should have gotten all these cases tossed out.

Times have been rough for the anti-P2P industry lately.
It’s worth noting that MediaDefender was purchased for $42,500,000 in 2005, while this recent sale of MediaSentry (a similar-sized company) was for $936,000.
Both companies had a business that was highly dependent on contracts with the movie and music industries, and both companies went into a tailspin last year when those industries abruptly pulled the plug.
MediaDefender’s leaked internal email exposed them as a deceptive, two-faced operation – telling their clients one thing while admitting the exact opposite in private. It would have been quite a breakthrough for Beckerman & co. if MediaSentry’s email had been leaked instead of MediaDefender’s.
The firing of MediaDefender founders Saaf and Herrera was literally a requirement before the company could join forces with MediaSentry. In those damning emails, Saaf and Herrera proved themselves to be outright liars, and having them remain onboard would have severely hurt MediaSentry’s credibility as a supposedly-trustworthy evidence gatherer for any future court cases.
