CA voters to get print-outs
California Secretary Kevin Shelley says he wants all electronic voting systems bought by California counties to provide paper print-outs to allow voters to verify their votes, and auditors to verify election results.
His announcement follows the controversy surrounding the security flaws said to be in widely used Diebold e-voting systems.
Nine percent of California counties used electronic voting systems in the October 2003 recall election, and 32-40% will probably use them in the March 2004 elections, says the California Voter Foundation.
Shelley’s office certifies all voting machines used for elections in California.
"Paper audit trails are currently the best way to prevent anyone from bungling or stealing our elections," says EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation) legal director Cindy Cohn.
