Amazon drops download prices

p2pnet news view Music:- Over in the UK, Amazon has dropped the price of some of its downloads, says The Telegraph, putting the move down to a bid to challenge Appple.

Who said Apple was the cause? Amazon? Or the lamescream media?

Is the reality more likely to be the George W. Bush recession has forced Amazon to make a (largely empty) gesture to pull in more punters?

Songs, including tunes by Lady GaGa, are going for 29p (about 42 cents), says the story.

But only 100.

Or has Amazon reached an undisclosed deal with Vivendi Universal, EMI, Warner Music and Sony Music whereby they’ve agreed to dramatically slash their wholesale prices (which, the last we heard, were anything between 65 and 80 cents per), and will it soon be announcing pricing on all of its corporate product will be similarly reduced?

Meanwhile, “Last year, 16 percent of digital-music buyers in the U.S. used Amazon’s MP3 store to purchase tracks, according to NPD,” says paidContent. But 87% “used iTunes to download music”.

However, the statistics should probably be taken with a huge grain of salt, especially where iTunes is concerned.

With clients such as International Flavors & Fragrance and Wrigley, the company burst upon the music scene out of nowhere, suddenly claiming to be an authority.

In 2005, when LimeWire was still a force to be reckoned with, the company claimed Apple iTunes downloads had tied with LimeWire’s.

Meanwhile, however, Amazon has indeed whacked a hefty lump off 100 releases.

According to Which?, it has some five million tracks available.

Will this teensy loss leader be enough to make any kind of  impact?
