p2pnet and privacy — updated

p2pnet news view P2P:- Yesterday I did a post on p2pnet’s privacy policy and said if you’re worried about it, don’t be: I don’t know who you are, what you are, where you are or anything else about you, and I don’t want to know.

I was surprised by the comments, especially the second which basically said I store all kinds of user data.

To someone else who thought I had an “inordinate” dislike of Google, I said I felt the same way about Fa$ebook, Yahoo (highly appropriate name), Microsoft, et al.

“jon, you have twitter page. do you also have a myspace page and a facebook page?” catflap asked.

Yes to Fa$ebook, No to Rupert’sSpace.

“jon, i`ve never taken you for a hypocrite, but should i be having second thoughts? :P ” – he also wondered, not too seriously.  :)

I do. But no worries, cf, I only use Twitter and Fa$ebook to post p2pnet headlines, and very, very occasional responses to other people.

Another reader followed up on another comment which said I collect data on everything, including the kitchen sink, but couldn’t find any evidence of anything alarming.

But Tom Koltai took my point saying »»»

Google is doing more than Deep Packet Inspection – they are storing your needs and desires in a database. They know what you shop for. They know how often. They know if you look at naughty bits – or if you cheat on your homework.

They KNOW.

And on the other side of the coin – there is not one single search that you can do on Pirate Bay that isn’t replicated on Google. Try it.

See if you can search for a torrent on Pirate that you then can’t find on Google.

Interesting isnt it.

Pirate Bay are being prosecuted because ythey filter out the crap. Google are left alone because they hide the data with Crap.

It is interesting. More from Tom on TPB in this story.

Meanwhile, here’s what my friend who hosts p2pnet had to say »»»

Why would anyone raid our servers for information about users? They aren’t committing crimes on p2pnet. Even if some users were, it’d be them whose information The Man would be interested in, not the people  trolling around on the message boards. This is a news site, not The Pirate Bay.

I’m not the gate keeper for anyone that I know of — except me. And I can get into trouble all by myself without help from anyone :)

Meanwhile, under the headline ‘How to get free press for your billion dollar corp using and branding kids all over the country,’ Gubatron left a link to his thoughts on Gargle & Co, to wit »»»

To pull this Marketing Stunt, you need to own a billion dollar corporation, publicly traded with a market cap of about USD $100 billion traded on the NASDAQ. Then you need to have yearly revenues of $21,795,550,000 or about $41,467 per hour.

Having all this money, there`s an ingenious evil marketing strategy you can implement that will make you look good, get your free press and it`s only going to cost about $150,000, which is the equivalent of let`s say 3.6 hours worth of your revenue, so think about it, in 3 and half hours from now you should have the budget for it.

If you have made up your mind 3.6 hours after reading this, here is what you need to do:

1) Start modifying the logo of your company on every holiday or special occasion.
2) Create and promote a competition in all schools across the country for kids to redesign an out of the box version of your logo, and offer $50,000 in prizes.

Open the competition to all U.S. residents between the ages of 5 and 18 who attend elementary and secondary schools (i.e. grades K-12) in the U.S. The National Winner will win a $15,000 college scholarship to be used at the school of their choice, a trip to your main Office, a laptop computer, and a t-shirt printed with their doodle. Also award the winner`s school a $25,000 technology grant towards the establishment/improvement of a computer lab. (This is where you`ll spend roughly $50k)

The Prizes will go as follow:
# Each of the other 3 National Finalists will win a trip to your main Office, a laptop computer, and a t-shirt printed with their doodle.
# Each of the other 36 Regional Winners will win a trip to your main Office and a t-shirt printed with their doodle.
# Each of the other 360 State Finalists will receive an official winner`s certificate.

What your company gets in exchange:
Free Press on all major media outlets TWICE, once when the competition is announced and once when the winner is announced. You know that if you wanted to get that amount of attention it would cost you millions of dollars in advertising. Nothing beats free press baby!

Best of all, you will inspire millions of kids ages 5 to 18 to admire your company and your brand, you will imprint your logo in their brains permanently, they will redraw it over and over while thinking how to make your company better. They will even write essays about you.

All the kids get to think they`ll make the best logo and win the first prize (poor bastards). This is the best time to create an image of trust in their minds when they think of your bran. In the future it will be hard for them to pick any other competing company over yours. In the end they will also be more than willing to work for you once they`re old enough.”

And remember, adds Gubatron, “Don’t Look Evil!”

Cheers!
Jon

Dont worry People you can trust p2pnet!

The only info that p2pnet or Jon keep are on your comp in a cookie that has your name when you post a comment :)

I, myself make communicamamations with Jon

and you people ard getting too paranoid

What does it say at the bottom of every p2pnet page? — Wordpress

If you are concerned contact them Paranoia is not cool!1

  2. testing 123 Says:

Tom is on the money. Good reply.

  3. Reader's Write Says:

    @comcast,

Also, the cookie can be blocked, as I just did, and the “name” won’t saved (i’m testing 123).

As I said in the previous topic, that Jon links to in this topic, I can block or spoof most everything and have no issue at all and even still comment.

I’m still waiting on that “readers write” to prove me wrong and tell me again how p2pnet requires everything under the sun to even look at the page.

    Should I hold my breath?

  4. Reader's Write Says:

fuq, glad I didn’t hold my breath (not that it would make a difference these days). :P

So we can all reliably state that what the troll said in the other topic about how p2pnet.net requires personal info to view this site is fulla shit.

FULLA SHIT! (had to yell it ;) )

I can block everything and still post here.

Sarah, TY for bring this up, and you are wrong. Unless you prove otherwise. I would test anything you state, since I’m all into this and it has my interest. But… so far…. heh

The only conclusion I can, in all honestly, make is that:
    1) the troll works for McAfee
    2) works for Google
    3) provoking a response
    4) someone who doesn’t know how a computer works
    5) just a troll just trying to put this site down.

I already know people who don’t want to contribute anymore due to the recent Ontario judge ruling.

Don’t make it worse with your bullshit and lies. Because that’s just what it is.

When i first started reading p2pnet I was wondering about the sign up stuff
and if anything was being logged like googone does, having been here awhile
I now know as a certainty, NOTHING IS LOGGED!!
Trolls need to move on nothing to see here!!!
NO i dont work for the site
NO i dont even e-mail jon, whoever he is……..
Privacy is important to me, and I respect those who respect mine !!!!
    (steps down from soap box)
    Have a nice day!
    Share the wealth & CopyFight!!!

  6. Ottawa Gal Says:

Yes, I am one of those who no longer wish to post here, reply here, or send Jon something I find of interest, due to the Ontario judge ruling. :(

However, a year ago (or so) when Jon went on vacation and needed someone to mod the site, he asked if I would do it while he was away. I agreed. Myself and my husband did it from work & home.

Having access as Admin, we both saw the same thing: post by 127.0.0.1. Reply by 127.0.0.1. Spam by 127.0.0.1. Held for moderation by 127.0.0.1 and some other stuff by 127.0.0.1

    Jon (p2pnet.net) really doesn’t log IP’s.

My hubby is the privacy freak, runs a few bots to check for open proxies to use, and checks for exploitable systems (I have stories to tell that was shown to me. Trust me I saw stuff that freaked me. Example: we had the host of transportation.us.gov and many other US gov hosts and many more things I don’t wish to state here.)

We have posted here with those IP’s and will maybe continue to do so.

I can tell you that what was said is pure BS. He/we can post as we wish without being blocked, even if we relay via safety.transportation.us.gov

Bell Canada will log this with their DPI though. If we can encrypt and use diff exploitable hosts, and post here, you can a well.

    Conclusion:
The “SHILL” is full of shit.

    //
Note: I know nothing. I only saw what I saw and commented on what I saw.

  7. Comeoncomcast Says:

    PS

Jon it looks like your head is floating in space :)

  8. Jon Says:

    It is. ;)

    Cheers!
