Apache gets Cloudscape
p2pnet.net News:- IBM plans to create an open-source project around the Cloudscape Java database, says Reuters here, going on:
“IBM said that current programming code of Cloudscape, a database product written in Java programming language, will be given to nonprofit Apache Software Foundation that spearheads open source projects.
“IBM estimated the value of its contribution to be about $85 million (45 million pounds). The open source project will be called Derby.”
Reuters quotes Janet Perna, general manager of IBM’s data management business, as saying that IBM uses Cloudscape in more than 70 of its product and, “If we found this useful,” others would also find it useful.
Derby is targeted for applications such as running a small website or POS (point-of-sales) systems that don’t need large dbases.
