The Pirate Bay: Pyrrhic victory
p2pnet news view Freedom | P2P:- “It makes any penalty look like the last scene in Braveheart.”
Or put another way, the vaunted Hollywood and Big 4 record labels victory against The Pirate Bay is in fact Pyrrhic.
Because despite corporate claims of a resounding triumph, repeated endlessly in the lamescream media, it’s not over yet.
Not even nearly.
In fact, Fudzilla points out, “most pundits” figure appeals courts will, “take a different view of the case and might even over turn it.
But the biggest problem for the film and music industry is that Pirate Bay is still there, says the story, going on »»»
Its servers are not in the country and it is continuing to operate. The court case has been a godsend to those who support P2P. It not only proved that state legislators have been lent on by the music and film business, it indicated that no one actually understood the technology involved.
If anything, the high profile court case promoted file sharing in a positive way for the pirates. Instead of appearing like criminals, the ‘pirates’ where shown to be well meaning, if slightly arrogant geeks, who were not making a penny from their antics. It makes any penalty look like the last scene in Braveheart. The Bully won and the penalty was stupid and the so called bad guys looked like Robin Hood.
As a result Pirate Bay membership has swelled following the trial. The outcry against the sentence has been huge in Sweden. Indeed it is starting to look that instead of bring an end to P2P it could be the beginning of something big.
Politicians don’t like being seen as doing something unpopular and the sentencing of the Pirate Bay organisers is starting to appear just that.
Fudzilla says it’s “strange” the movie industry didn’t see this coming.
But it’s not strange at all. In fact, if the corporate movie and music industries can be noted for anything, it’s their complete inability to see which way is up.
Meanwhile, if anything, the TPB fiasco has, “strengthened resolve against them,” says the story, adding:
“Who has not had the urge to log onto Pirate Bay after spending a minute of your life watching one of those stupid anti-piracy adverts before you watch the main film?”
World-wide backlash
eZee.se admin Ryan is on the spot and confirms the Swedish citizenry is very far from heralding the decision as anything positive.
Addressing naysayers and shills who are busily trying to flood sites with ‘comment’ posts suggesting we should all be either shaking in our boots, or simply give up altogether, “The backlash was not just in Sweden, but worldwide!” – he says, adding »»»
Surprised by the huge demonstration in Stockholm (and others planned in four other major cities) around Sweden?
Surprised how the demonstrations have garnered so much free press, a PR win for the pirate party and a loss for the MAFIAA’s own cut and paste easy-to-see-BS press releases?
Scared at the roughly 50% increase of members (in 1 day!) that the ruling brought the Pirate Party in Sweden, making them one of the biggest parties out numbering two traditional and decades-old parties! ?
Scared of the prospect that if the Pirate Party really achieves its goal of getting seats in the EU parliament, REAL copyright change can come!? You can’t bribe those people!
Stay tuned.

“You canât bribe those people!”
O RLY???
People show real face when they are given power.
I do like the Pirate party.
But the Pirate party must talk accountability too. Accountability for all.
As long as the politicians of all parties are not made accountable for their actions before those who elected them, expect no change. After all, Obama promised change and Obama delivered change, 180 degrees opposite.
Beatrice Ask and Cristine Albanel should be before the court now, for treason.

C’mon, you can bribe anyone. Our entire civilization is predicated on it.

Almost anyone can be bribed. A party’s stated goals don’t preclude that.
The real question is how much bribing it will take, and what the consequences will be for the morale (if nothing else) of everyone who would otherwise support the party. That’s what I want to know.
Realistically, the only thing you can’t bribe is a grassroots movement. The only reason that’s the case is that you don’t have anyone with the power to overcome everyone else. I can’t imagine the pirate party falls under this category. It’s noble right now. But, as the saying goes, absolute power corrupts absolutely.
