p2pnet bans troll posts: redux
p2pnet news view Freedom | P2P:- I need to re-run a post from January, 2008, the original pic on the right replaced by a more recent one from surfer, and a quote from another.

“An Internet troll, or simply troll in Internet slang, is someone who posts controversial messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, with the intention of baiting other users into an emotional response” ~ Wikipedia
p2pnet went online in 2002 and when I started out, I was virtually by myself in constantly and consistently writing about what was then, and still is, going on with the entertainment cartels as they try to browbeat and terrorise people into becoming unquestioning corporate cash cows.
I tolerated trolls. But that`s changed. These days A) they`re just trying to stir up trouble `for fun`; or B), they`re corporate shills trying, and succeeding, to divert attention away from matters at hand.
So from now on, I`ll delete all troll posts that I see, together with responses.
One of them, Musico, said … Show you are truly for freedom and free speach [sic] like you keep saying and leave my posts alone.
I don`t need to `show` anything. I`m being sued by a very rich company and, in another separate case, by a very rich individual because I believe people should be allowed to say what they think, whether I agree with them or not.
Freedom of speech doesn`t, however, include allowing fools free rein.
As I said to Musico, Disagreement is fine. Deliberate and repeated posts designed solely to create dissension, aren`t.
In a follow-up, “on p2pnet, anyone from anywhere has been able to comment – anonymously or otherwise – on anything, and people with strongly held convictions do their best to hammer them home in the face of intense, and often ribald, opposition,” I said, going on:
“That’s cool and for 99.9999 percent of the time, no worries. Posts can become acerbic and sometimes, just plain stupid. But that`s OK too. That`s life.
“What`s uncool, though, is for someone to try to take over completely, sidetracking the issues and turning the forum into a zoo …”
Cheers!

Trolls are not stupid.
Their posts are usually well written and the spelling and grammar of their posts are perfect.
It is the replies that are usually stupid; when stupid replies appear, the trolls are very happy.

So did I.
I’ve only seen one maybe two successful trolls in my near 30 years on the net. The rest were pale imitations and when it came down to it, not worth the time to read the posts and respond. A successful troll is one that not only baits you and responds, but is also capable of getting the people on their side at least 95% of the time. So you wind up with a well educated and textually spoken individual that is entertaining while at the same time after tearing the site down. If there were ever a professional troll that one missed it’s calling.
I’ve got to give Jon credit. He’s been more than fair over the years. Geeze, I’ve posted my thoughts and often as not they’ve wound up wandering all over the countryside away from topic. (Sorry Jon, it’s not intentional, it’s the way my mind works.) Maybe it’s old age setting in. Maybe it’s the lack of time to give fools. I don’t know. I do know I’ve never had any problem whatever, not just here but having troubles at most any site is very rare.
You stay long enough, there is always a troll. In the case of Jon’s site theme I guess we should expect more than we see.
