Europe says No! to French anti-P2P plan

p2pnet news view Freedom | P2P:- The European Parliament has overwhelmingly said No! to French president Nicolas Sarkozy’s plans to use taxpayer money to pay for corporate entertainment cartel business development.

Vivendi Universal, EMI, Warner Music and Sony Music, and Time Warner, Viacom, Fox, Sony, NBC Universal and Disney, are trying to suborn governments around the world in their efforts to gain complete and total control of how ‘product’ is distributed online, and by whom.

However, although some governments, notably those in New Zealand, Australia, France and America, are more than willing to cooperate, Hollywood and the Big 4 record labels are being thwarted at every turn, mainstream media reports to the contrary notwithstanding.

Now European politicians have voted 40 to 4 in vaour of amendment 46 (formerly 138), “which states that restrictions to the fundamental rights and freedoms of Internet users can only be put in place after a decision by judicial authorities (except when public security is threatened),” says ISPreview, going on »»»

The move is being seen as a serious blow to supporters of a Three-Strikes system for dealing with online piracy, which could have seen suspected illegal downloader`s being cut-off from their broadband ISPs for repeated abuse. Both ISPs and civil rights campaigners have been bitterly opposed to such a move.

Amendment 46 was first adopted last September 2008 by an overwhelming majority of the European Parliament, and approved by the European Commission despite requests from the French Presidency and rights holders to reject it. The latest vote is being seen as yet another rejection of pressure from the French government to reach a compromise.

Once again, the European Parliament has demonstrated it can resist pressure and stand for the rights and freedoms of citizens.

The vote must still be confirmed in plenary.
