Pirate Bay verdict is fair: Paul McCartney

p2pnet news view | P2P | Music:- The verdict levelled by the corporate copyright cartels — sorry, a Swedish court — at The Pirate Bay four is fair, reckons Paul McCartney.

“If you get on a bus you’ve got to pay,” the BBC has him saying.

“And I think it’s fair, you should pay your ticket.”

He adds »»»

The problem is you get a lot of young bands coming up and some of them aren’t going to last forever so if they have a massive hit that’s going to pay their mortgage forever.

They’re going to feed the children on that and if they don’t get that money, if they don’t see that money, I think it’s a bit of a pity.

I’ve been very lucky because my main era with the Beatles was at a time when everyone did get paid.

Particularly for young bands and they’ve got a young family, I don’t want to see them destitute after a couple of years when they were mega. So I think it’s fair.

Do you think Macca has been listening to the RIAA?

No need to stay tuned.

  1. who cares Says:

like anyone gives a crap what paul mcCartney’s got to say. he stopped being even remotely relevant 30years ago.

  2. Tapper Says:

My mortgage doesn’t get paid forever because I work I did 25 years ago, so why should yours. Everyone else has to work their whole life but these guys think they can work for 5 years and live comfortably forever. Where is that written?

  3. SJ Says:

What about all those billions of people that never have a hit that they can live on for years? Should they just starve to death? No, wait… they go working… why should someone to be entitled to have the right to 1000000 years of royalities only because they have written one hit?

  4. Reader's Write Says:

Paul, your heart is in the right place and I love you but…
you are speaking about a topic you have not researched thoroughly.
You are a victim of mass media misinformation.
It is your duty as a celebrity to not contribute to this madness. Same goes for Tom Cruise and a few others.

  5. Reader's Write Says:

This statement makes me want to F&*^ing SCREAM!!!!!!!
“if they have a massive hit that’s going to pay their mortgage forever. They’re going to feed the children on that and if they don’t get that money, if they don’t see that money, I think it’s a bit of a pity.”

Crap bands have screwed us over for many years with their one hits!! One F*&^ing hit should not set someone up for life, NEVER!!
Many years of constant hits and great albums should but not one god damn hit.

Why is it not that I can put 1 years worth of work in and be set up for life, at least that is way more work than 1 hit.

See these co&k suc*ers are so out of touch that they believe one crappy piece of work is deserving of millions.
I am an artist, I have sold prints for 220.00 and originals for up to 600.00 a piece and I can guarentee it takes me longer than any one hit song and my pictures are longer lasting.
I do not deserve to be set up for life because of 1 picture, so why do they?

  6. Reader's Write Says:

I would say “Who is Paul McCartney?”, but won’t.

What Paul Maccartney would say is “What’s a retirement savings plan?”

They do not want to save for retirement early and they want the society to pay them retirement through copyright.

  7. Mike Says:

It’s people like Paul McCartney that got labels used to raking in dough, so it’s his fault in a way. Him and Elvis. Twats.

  8. United Hackers Association Says:

AND NOW YOU KNOW WHY JOHN LENNON HATED MACmoney

wasn’t about being nice being happy and in tune with the world was ABOUT $$$$$$$$$$$
that is why he dumped his long time girl friend too , he got sick a having to pretend to care about anyhting but his self and his money

    isn’t there a beatles tune somehting similar….

  9. Devil's Advocate Says:

I’m surprised Paul didn’t add “divorce settlements” to that list of things these poor musicians have to think about.

  10. Monkey D. Luffy Says:

I always LOATHED Paul, he’s the greediest and most unscrupulous of the Beatles. I’m glad that one legged bitch soaked him in the divorce settlement.

  11. Eric Says:

No, the era of the Beatles was a time when managers had already taken control over bands which would then NOT get paid very much, certainly not commensurate with the work done in touring. The Beatles had Brian Epstein, who didn’t take too much, and their friends in other bands were too polite to tell them how their managers were screwing them, or perhaps were too naive to notice it themselves until much later.

  12. Devious204 Says:

lennon must be rolling in his grave

  13. Henry Emrich Says:

Hey, now….let’s not come down too hard on the guy:

I mean, he’s out of touch — WAY out of touch.
Sorry, but after thirty years or more of fame and being considered one of the “classic” acts, his experience of the “music industry” is bound to be a hell of a lot different from that of the “up-and-coming bands” he’s jabbering about.

And let’s not forget the fact that a hit wouldn’t “pay their mortgage forever” — they’d have enough money to not NEED a mortgage (and thus not have to pay the bankers 3 times what the property is actually worth. (Little details like how mortgages work, how bankers are scum etc. mysteriously don’t occur to folks who’ve been multi-millionaires for any length of time, but I digress.

Janis Ian “gets it”, in regard to p2p, primarily because she hasn’t spent thirty years being mollycoddled by the record companies, and completely lost touch with what’s going on. AND, the guy is way more talented than that idiot Sonny Bono (or the other Bono jackass from U2.)

What I’m asking is: is this really “news” that the few who manage to actually make good via the current system would whore for the status who?

Those in privileged positions very often fail to notice that fact: why do you think White Southerners in the 1960s often said they thought Blacks were “happy” with segregation?

    Not newsworthy, let’s move on.

  14. Henry Emrich Says:

“The guy = Paul McCartney, NOT Janis Ian (who is a woman).

Just wanted to clarify, because I didn’t word that too well. (I have the flu or something.)

  15. Jon Says:

    @ Henry

    Janis Ian – http://www.p2pnet.net/story/1873

    Cheers!

  16. Henry Emrich Says:

    Jon;

Thanks. I needed that one today :)

  17. Kyle Says:

He’s got a point. You people attacking him are just feeling guilty because you know you are thieves. If you want a product, bloody pay for it. Macca is a legend and will be remembered long after you nasty wankers are loooong gone.

  18. Henry Emrich Says:

    Kyle:
    Fanboy?
“If you want a product, bloody pay for it.”
And if THEY want the State to grant them a monopoly “for a limited time”, explicitly in order to advance “science and the useful arts”, then they can GODDAMN WELL let the thing expire on time, and not keep gutting the public domain.

The only ‘point” that ‘Maca” (what kind of lame-ass fanboy-nickname is THAT?) made was that he’s completely ignorant as to the history and purpose of copyright law, and willing to suck RIAA dick, as one of their multimillionaire stable.

Now lemme ask you a question, Kyle: how do you figure “Maca” will be ABLE to be around “long after we’re gone?”
That’s what the PUBLIC DOMAIN IS FOR.

Read up on it sometime, and stop being a pissy little fanboy.

Also, you’re laying it on a bit thick with all the “bloody”, “wankers” and “maca” thing, don’t ya think?
We get it: you’re a fan of McCartney, so you attempt to be all hardcore Liverpuddlian.

BTW, I’m pretty sure the guy who runs this site (Jon Newton) has more “street-cred” in that regard, too, seeing as he’s originally from England.

  19. eh? Says:

    im not a thief.

steal: To take (the property of another) without right or permission.

copy: An imitation or reproduction of an original; a duplicate

when one downloads a digital copy they are not stealing by definition. it is the act of copying.

  20. Dude from Finland Says:

I don’t feel sorry for Macca, I pity the fool. I pity him because he is so out of touch it is unreal. Sure he HAD talent back in the day and now he is a hasbeen. I don’t feel guilty. I have downloaded songs off Napster and Audiogalaxy and whatnot back in the day. If I liked the artist I actually bought their music. Audiogalaxy was great in that way, especially the recommend thing. Kinda like “People who bought this, also bought…” on Amazon but for the bands I really liked. There would be in excess of 50 bands who’s CD’s I would never have bought if I hadn’t found them through Audiogalaxy.

  21. RadialSkid Says:

George Carlin said it best: “The wrong two Beatles died first.”

  22. Real World person Says:

Ok. For those who even care to know. The Beatles lost $100 million for the rights to market t-shirts, lunch boxes, etc. Paul McCartney has lost more money for his WORK than any of you will ever earn. He made a statement about new artists and new bands. He feels that it would be nice for them to earn a living from the works that they create. If they can’t, then they will not enjoy the luxury of creating more music. He didn’t whine about losing a bazillion dollars in his lifetime. I would rather have him control the use of his OWN songs in the future. The day that his copyrights expire, you will see how cheap and abused the music will be. You will be sickened by the grotesque commercialism exercised into your home 24/7. I can live with a Nike Revolution shoe commercial. Just wait until they are playing Beatles songs on feminine hygiene commercials. Or a trojan ad with… Happiness is a warm gun …or come together. We can work it out… on a therapists ad…. Followed by.. Hello/Goodbye… on a divorce lawyer’s ad. Your mother should know….on a Pro-Life proposition. Get Back…on an anti-immigration proposition. Carry that Weight… on a Jenny Craig ad. Hmm, maybe some won’t be so bad…

  23. Dude from Finland Says:

Yeah I get the compensation part but the compensation part where you make one hit and make a gazillion bucks is just plain idiotic. Unless it’s the single most played single in the history of man then fine but as long as there are things called “genres” in music it will just never happen. Payola makes sure of that.

@ Real World Person: The day his copyrights expire is the day music will be free and people can do what they feel like with his music. Is it really that bad if someone takes his song and makes a new version? Because that is more or less what we are seeing all over the place nowadays. Extending copyright is bad. 50 years is enough, any more than that and the ones who get the cash are the record labels.

  24. Aaron Says:

What the crap are all of you talking about, claiming that Paul McCartney has NO IDEA what he’s talking about? Of course he does, and because of who he is and what he has contributed to music, he most definitely has the power to say what he did about Pirate Bay. Young artists DO get screwed out of a paycheck because music fans are illegally downloading their material and the artists dont get a dime for it. The only difference is, is that Paul is worth a billion or more, so he hasn’t a lot to worry about. But as a veteran musician, he has every right and has the respect to speak on the behalf of artists. He’s sticking up for them, and a lot of you are putting him down? Paul isn’t the issue – the artists not getting paid, is.
