XP SP2 ‘update’ is here
p2pnet.net News:- It’s here. Finally.
XP Service Pack 2, that is.
“Service Pack 2 Provides Proactive Protection for Windows XP Customers,” says Microsoft, going on that it’ll “localize the software in 25 languages over the next two months and distribute it to computer manufacturers, enterprise customers and consumers through downloads, retail installation, free CDs and on new PCs”.
‘Proactive Protection ‘ is something of a contradiction in terms given the many and various MS major (mostly) and minor security holes which have caused – and still cause – problems everywhere.
There is, however, a positive aspect: security and anti-virus companies around the world are enjoying an upsurge.
In the meanwhile, XP SP2 (scans nicely, doesn’t it? ; ) is here and the easiest way for current Windows XP to get hold of it is to simply turn on the Automatic Updates feature in Windows XP, says Microsoft.
Or as Harry McCracken says on PC World’s Techlog here, “I won’t take that route, which to me feels a tad like letting a doctor with a shaky history stick pills in your mouth without telling you what they are or what they’re for. (Too many Microsoft ‘fixes’ have caused new problems – so I like to install patches on my own schedule, and only after learning a bit about them.)”
Be that as it may, customers without reliable Net connections can get a free disc through the Microsoft Web and, “Businesses of all sizes should be evaluating Service Pack 2 now, if they have not begun doing so already. Business customers using Windows XP should deploy the service pack on their most important systems, especially notebooks and computers for home workers, as soon as is practical.”
Go here for chapter and verse.
