Benjamin Vanderford, 22, wants a seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. Nothing unusual about that.
And he decided to use p2p file sharing neworks to distribute a video he’d made of himself.
Nothing unusual about that either, as Michael Badnarik will attest.
But at a time when the Net is replete with shocking tapes of people being executed in Iraq by having their heads hacked off, Vanderford faked his own decapitation and posted the results online.
The tape was around for months but no one noticed it until a militant Islamic site “that has previously carried claims of violent acts that eventually were verified” picked it up, says an Associated Press story here.
“The clip aired Saturday on the Arab satellite television station Al-Arabiya, as well as the Lebanese Al Hayat-LBC satellite station, before Western news organizations, including The Associated Press and Reuters, published news of the unverified beheading,” says AP.
In the video, “The American … identified himself as Benjamin Vanderford and urged US forces to leave Iraq,” says Aljazeera here, going on, ‘If we don’t, everyone is gonna be killed in this way … I have been offered in exchange for prisoners here in Iraq,’ the terrified-looking man said, rocking back and forth in his chair, his hands tied behind his back. The video then showed a hand with a large knife apparently slicing through the neck of a limp body.”
“It’s a hoax,” the man’s mother, Theresa Vanderford, is quoted as saying in a Reuters report here. “He’s very computer savvy and stuff.”
Aljazeera says it recently, “emphasised a code of ethics which stresses the importance of accuracy and credibility of information”.

This “so called” American is an obvious embarrassment to the country he calls home. I would like to point out however that he is a Democrat and “progressive” at that. This, point in fact, makes him 90% Canadian. If he wishes to give aid and comfort to Muslim EXTREMEISTS, I suggest: he may chain himself to the local mosque and preach his anti-Bush rhetoric there whilst starving to death- it would be much more dramatic and Hollywood might even accept him into their omnipresent enclave.
