p2p in action

p2pnet.net News:- P2P Saves Windows Users from Viruses!

That’s what the people at Downhill Battle say.

They could be right – but only if Bill and the Boyz over at Microsoft have their act together, something not everyone is convinced is the case. For example, there seem to be a few problems in the world of peer-to-peer.

Anway, DHB likes Bram Cohen’s excellent BitTorrent and is using it to, well, help Bill & Co with their distribution problems.

You see, Microsoft hasn’t been able to make its XP SP2 update available to everyone, so it’s letting it out in pieces.

But, Bill, BitTorrent can help (ask Linspire’s Mike Robertson).

So can DHB, which has launched a website to help Microsoft get the update to the masses AND demonstrate how p2p file sharing technology can handle files that are too large for centralized distribution, with all that implies.

Check it out.

This is what Life is all about People helping People or as we say P2P

  2. Reader's Write Says:

just like P2Pnet.net’s front page used to say:

    peer-to-peer
    person-to-person
    ‘puter-to-’puter

XP SP2, BT and MS also mean mega PR for DHB and you gotta wonder. a zdnet story http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1104-5304254.html says dhb is a Peer-to-peer advocacy group. since when I ask? I thought they were there to get fair play for independet musicians.

    So?

  5. Reader's Write Says:

heh. You must be a musician : )

Anything that pulls public attention to p2p and issues surrounding it has to be good. A few months back, the Great Unwashed General Public didn’t have much of an idea what p2p was. Now they’re starting to get the picture and sites such as DownHill Battle have a lot to do with that.

This upgrade is not intended for consumers. It is the Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers, duh, and is twice the size of the comsumer version that is coming.

Also, MS doesn’t need help disseminating it, they have bugs in it that fuck-up some 3rd party applications that have to be worked out. So, go ahead – download it and suffer with the problems.

SP2 really isn’t anything anyway – just more MS security hype (actually simply changes many default security settings to high), and oh, IE gets a pop-up blocker – ohhh, ahhh (and a few more useless things like security center). If you know a little about security now you will be just fine without it and should wait for SP3 (Longhorn) in 2006.

SP2 is designed for the average user, defined by Microsoft as someone who does not change default settings or applications (why is IE #1?); 80% of the computing public.

Bring on the update MS, tech. support people are gearing up for the flood of calls over fucked up systems. The user experience is going to be compromised with this update – wait and see. MS really couldn’t fix XP – so they created SP2 to lock down the system – you’ll get a pop-up windows to confirm most choices for instance while browsing.
