Never mind online leaks, Wolverine a hit

p2pnet news view | P2P | Movies:-Remember how 20th Century Fux was screaming about online leaks of an unfinished workprint of X-Men Origins: Wolverine a month before its official release date?

Not long after, it was followed by what was presumably the finished version, an event completely ignored by the lamescream media.

Why all the fuss?

Fux: ‘No one will want to see it when it’s already been on the P2P nets.’ [sob, sob]

However, it hasn’t made a blind bit of difference.

In fact, it’s, “howling its way to the top of the box office with an opening day gross of $35 million,” says EW.com.

And, “The gross put the star-crossed superhero flick — leaked print, swine-flu scare, bad reviews and all — in the neighborhood of Iron Man, which began last summer with a $35.2 million bang,” says E! Online.

“Exhibitor Relations was calling for Wolverine to close out the weekend with $85 million, a haul that would make it the fourth- or fifth-biggest summer starter this decade,” it posts.

Do you reckon all the viral online P2P marketing, handed to Fux on a plate, and for free, had anything to do with it?

No need to stay tuned.

  1. United Hackers Association Says:

star trek 2009 gets leaked a week before as well
    out as i writ ethis….

  2. Dreddsnik Says:

    Once again, no ‘devastation’.
Once again .. this fact will be ignored by those in power.

  3. United Hackers Association Says:

be careful there is a effort of fakes going about in ht epublic i see just peeking….
do not visit sites and do not use software …..

  4. Schmock Says:

It’s always a matter of control, much more than the fear of ‘devastation’ or losing money due to lousy camrips or else. The producers want full control about every single step of marketing their products. Any leak disturbs their marketing campaigns. For instance, “Wolverine” has been shown to a handful of journalists a few days before it’s release, but weeks after the leak of the unfinished product. Nevertheless, every journalist had to sign not only NOT to write about the movie before the day of release, but even NOT to utter his opinion about it. Freedom of opinion? No more topic anymore…

  5. Scaramouche Says:

    @Schmock

Thats strange! I got to see Star Trek 2 – 3 weeks before the release date & the studio rep encouraged everyone to write a blog about it & actually asked for positive / negative comments.

Incidentally, they had the whole metal detector, phones confiscated at the door circus. I was going to wear my pirate bay shirt, but didnt want to risk been not admitted!!!!

  6. Dreddsnik Says:

” It’s always a matter of control, much more than the fear of ‘devastation’ or losing money due to lousy camrips or else. The producers want full control about every single step of marketing their products. ”

That may be part of the REAL reason, but it isn’t nearly as dramatic when buying laws as
    screaming about nonexistent financial devastation.

They know they are not losing a dime.
We know they are not losing a dime.
The politicians they buy know they aren’t losing a dime.

As long as money continues to go to the right hands, facts will be ignored.

  7. Reader's Write Says:

Perhaps the mpaa should be equally paranoid about public radio stations as well. I say this because I got to hear the entire plot on a local news radio broadcast. Sure I may not have been able to see any of the fight scenes, (85% of the movie), but it spared me any temptation to download the movie or see it in at the theatre.

  8. Schmock Says:

@ Dreddsnik: “They know they are not losing a dime.
We know they are not losing a dime.
The politicians they buy know they aren’t losing a dime.”

True, true! But they are losing billions of nickels smearing their politicians ;)

btw – here’s a link about the “maulkorb” (muzzle) for journalists who had to watch wolverine in germany a few days before the release. Sorry – only in german language.

  9. GrumpyOldFartWithAStick Says:

I still think this is a new trend in viral marketing.

Back to the tin-foil Tilley …

  10. Dreddsnik Says:

” I still think this is a new trend in viral marketing.

    Back to the tin-foil Tilley … ”

    Not at all.
Why else do you think that the source of the leak .. which has to
be an insider is never mentioned or pursued ?

  11. Matty Says:

I’m sure they will still cry about the movie making $20-$30 million less than expected, and use the Pirate Bay as a scapegoat anyway.

The funny thing is, I don’t think any of us are upset that they are raking in millions upon millions of dollars (after all, they are the ones who risked investing millions to make the movie, promote it, etc.). But the fact that they are being dicks about it and trashing the people who still want to see the movie, just stirs the pot and pisses thousands of potential customers off enough for them just to download it and stay away from theaters.

  12. Reader's Write Says:

I wouldn’t pay to go see that garbage movie. I have no interest ion it. I never did like the X-men comic books to begin with.

    I won’t look at it.

But if a friend downloads it and asks me to watch one night would i? Maybe or maybe not. I won’t go out of my way for it.

    Is that a lost sale?

  13. sick of it all Says:

…cant they just stfu (greedy fuucks)? why must it always be one more dollar, on top of millions…as if they never saw a movie for free at a friends house or something. a family member’s perhaps. according to their faulty logic, if one doesnt pay to see the film, then the industry and themselves suffer. so if you see a movie at someones house and didnt pitch in on it you might as well be a ‘pirate’….they all need to be pushed off a cliff imho…

  14. Reader's Write Says:

So let me get this straight……this movie has been leaked online, not once, but twice; both times by hollywood insiders. Despite this, it’s gone on to make 35 million dollars on its opening weekend—–and they still have the balls to blame people with video cameras for all their problems?

  15. surfer Says:

they seemed to glaze over the fact the fact that the overall acceptable rating for the opening was 39%.

heres how I see it going down.

    a) movie gets leaked (from insider, again), MAFIAA has a shit fit because their perfectly orchestrated circus act of publicity leading up to the release is totally derailed.
    b) fuck, shit, fuck.. instead of our well planned bullshit, we gotta come up with some other bullshit before people find out the previews are great, but the movie fucking sucks.
    c) have a press conference to bullshit the media that there ‘will be over 400 different endings, showcasing different endings in different countries’, and the ever favorite, default fallback bullshit, ‘the workprint is NOTHING like the final movie, there is still alot of scenes to add yet’.
    d) fire that fuck at Fox who had the balls to download it and write a review on the movie. (he even wrote a bullshittly good review!) (bullshit like? sp?)
    e) get Jack to go on record at a press conference backing our bullshit up with some of his own bullshit, ad nauseam…
    f) get the bitches we pay off at CNN, NYT et al, to run this shit before everyone finds out the movie sucks.
    g) cry rape because the movie ONLY opened @ 40 million, instead of like Iron Man @ 100 million. all the while comparing a GOOD movie to a 38% acceptable rating movie.
    h) shit, fuck, motherfucker… fucking sheeple found out the movie sucked before we could fleece enough of them.
    i) fuck it, blame piracy.

  16. surfer Says:

the Dark Night was distributed probably close to 300 million times, that million, worldwide.

the Dark Night cost 104 million to produce/can/distribute to the theatre.

the Dark Night, (as of this post) has grossed 1.3 billion dollars already.

I proactively file share 120gb/mo of copyrighted material, SPECIFICALLY copyrighted to the MAFIAA.

the indie stuff, we all pay for, kinda part of the ‘pirate code’, we buy the apps/music/videos from our brethren, we have morals.
    :)

Eat my shorts Dan ‘The Joker’ Glickman, you tard, oh and btw, Star Trek XI is already on the file sharing networks, so, have a nice day.

    stw

  17. Marty Robertson Says:

It wasn’t a CAM (camera copy of the screen). It was a digital file and a very good one. Probably from a studio DVD. Starting with Jericho’s second season, TV has been using Pre-air releases of the first two or three issues of a season. It works to gain ratings. If you watched a CAM of Star Trek’s latest I will bet you went to see it on the big screen and took friends, The same ones you told how great it was when you watched the CAM. Let’s be real. Most of the CAM’S OUT THERE ARE JUST LONG TRAILERS. There is no way a washed out, dark video with squeeky audio and someone’s head blocking the most important sceens in the movie or the time he had to cover up the camera and the pic goes black for tem seconds.
Magicians use Misdirection alll the time to move your attention from the important thing to watch to what they want you to see. Are you watching the hat or the rabbit?
