SP2 - tomorrow?

p2pnet.net News:- Microsoft’s XP SP2 will be available by automatic update tomorrow.

“The software giant has told BBC News Online that its SP2 security patch will be put on servers that automatically update home PCs as from Wednesday,” says the Beeb here.

It’s referring to the small (80 mb) consumer version. The much larger network update has been unofficially available for some time.

In the meanwhile, even when SP2 does arrive, there will be problems for significant numbers of users given the huge number of applications which won’t like it.

Go here for a list of potentially balky software - including some of Microsoft’s own.

  1. Reader's Write Says:

The problem with that home SP2 “download” is that you must download it over and over again every time you want to update a computer - such as a second pc or after a reformat. The corporate version only needs to be downloaded one time, so it can be saved for future installations.

Of course, what a lot of people are doing is just going to Bittorrent or eDonkey and downloading the Corporate version (no activation req’d) of Windows XP with SP2 already slipstreamed into the iso (or bin) - so the CD will install Windows XP and all the SP2 updates at the same time.

If it’s been 3 years since you last installed XP, then it’s probably about time to flush out all the trash with a clean install anyway.
