I’m with Henry on this one, I like this MUCH better than the Lars, McCartney, ect “oh we love our pimp daddies in the RIAA, and we want to see copyright extend forever” attitude. It would not surprise me if one of these people eventually releases some song along the line of “the pirates are stealing all my money”. Cry me a river Paul…

For me, it would have been much more effective (and real) if he’d simply made the song without the dance. He would still have achieved all the exposure he could have hoped for.

What’s so awful about him using this to “publicize his music?”
1. It didn’t cost you a dime.
2. He’s shown his support for a more open and participatory culture.

I really think it’s a GOOD thing for people to use the “new paradigm” to get “noticed”.
Plus, it might get people remixing and doing their own versions and suchlike, and get us away from this damn nonparticipatory “just watch the “professionals” anti-culture we’ve degenerated into.

Same thing with Fanfiction: no matter how crappy it is (and yeah, some of it is truly dismal), at least people are CREATING, and participating in their own culture.

I could picture this getting reviewed by Beavis and Butthead, they had a lot of very obscure videos on that show.
To be honest, even if it is kind of a back door publicity stunt I would rather see more of this than have to gag watching people like Lars and the Metallica crew vigorously fellating the RIAA.

I know what you mean, and I love the general idea. But sceptic that I am, I wonder how much of David’s motivation comes from a desire to use this as a way to publicise himself and his music.

Not only but also, be that as it may, and nonetheless, I’d rather see the rallying cry as, simply, ‘We’re all the pirates’.

Its a matter of perspective here, “we’re all the pirate bay” could turn into a rallying cry for file sharing types around the globe!

He gave us enough material to do the edits if you look at it right. And IMHO he aint that bad of an artist, I might actually pay for his music……….someday
