Was Google outage a warning?

p2pnet news view | Advertising:- The world didn’t come to an end, yesterday, when advertising behemoth Google crashed, and crashed again.

But, the fact Google-induced outages caused applications such as its Gmail and Google Analytics to go down, “may call into question the reliability of Web-based applications,”  ChannelWeb.

Said Google:

“An error in one of our systems caused us to direct some of our web traffic through Asia, which created a traffic jam. As a result, about 14% of our users experienced slow services or even interruptions. We’ve been working hard to make our services ultrafast and ‘always on,’ so it’s especially embarrassing when a glitch like this one happens. We’re very sorry that it happened, and you can be sure that we’ll be working even harder to make sure that a similar problem won’t happen again.”

Google also blew a fuse at the beginning of the year when every search, everywhere, was returning, “Warning – visiting this web site may harm your computer!”

Its “periodic service blips are undoubtedly a source of consternation for users and institutions,” says ChannelWeb, going on »»»

Arizona State University, for example, has switched its e-mail service from .edu over to user-created Gmail accounts. While the students may have enjoyed the outage to a certain degree — “I sent my term paper, professor, but Gmail was down; I’ll resend it when I get back to my dorm.” — professors and administrators were probably less than thrilled with the downtime: In addition to productivity losses, many universities use e-mail alerts to warn of on-campus emergencies or dangers.

“For a company that seems to be rousing the ire of business owners, the European Union and the FTC, maybe Google should focus on shoring up its products rather than world domination,” it adds.

Like any centalized systemonline applications are very unstable and vunerable. Moreover running script on top of a browser is very wastful and considering that most of the word is still using Internet explorer a big huge piece of crap full of bugs all those companies trying to run complex application on the web via a browser are doomed.

Running these online application are not even safe as Internet explorer is an heaven for hackers.

These online application are so crappy, it is not even funny!

Can you inagin that Google have the best online app? Think about the rest!

My ISP’s email server went down last week. How is not using google any safer? Campass networks and servers are just or perhaps even more likely to crash than google’s. Yes Google does dumb things, and they have done plenty of evil, but this argument against them holds no water. There are plenty of other things to not like them for, but their reliability, when compared to alternatives, is definitely not one of them.

Excellent point, Reader’s Write. Although we like to make a big deal out of it when Google goes down, the fact is it’s rare compared to most localized networks.

“Because of the nature of technology, whether it’s Google’s or someone else’s …You’re going to get bitten by the beast.” (The San Francisco Chronicle as quoted by Newsy)
