Flying Wi-Fi robot
p2pnet.net News:- It’s lighter than a box of matches, leaps tall buildings in a single bound – and it’s Wi-Fi.
It’s also bound to be a star attraction at the Future Creation Fair running from August 27 to 30 at the Tokyo International Forum.
Under discussion is the Seiko Epson FR-II micro-flying robot featuring Bluetooth wireless control and independent flight.
With an image sensor unit able to capture and transmit aerial images via Wi-Fi to a monitor, it also has two mini-LED lamps that can be controlled for signaling.
Two ultra-thin, ultrasonic motors drive two contra-rotating propellers and the world’s first linear actuator stabilizing mechanism handles attitude control during flight.
It also has the world’s smallest and lightest gyro-sensor and dynamic lift comes from powerful ultra-thin ultrasonic motors and newly designed, optimally shaped main rotors.
“As for the challenge of independent flight, Epson brought its many years of micromechatronics experience to bear in realizing the development of a linear actuator with faster response time and a high-precision attitude control mechanism, and a flight path control and independent flight system (primarily for hovering),” says a statement, adding:
“Epson was assisted by Chiba University’s Nonami (Control and Robotics) Laboratory in developing the control system for independent flight. The company also received advice on the rotor design from the Kawachi (Aeronautics and Astronautics) Laboratory at the University of Tokyo.”

Confused how this is Wi-Fi? Thought all the media reports said it was Bluetooth?

I thought it was, but …
“Bluetooth is an open standard for two-way, shortwave radio communications. Bluetooth promises broadband connectivity at 1 Mbps, and is a wireless technology that is supported by product and application development in a wide range of market segments. This includes software developers, peripheral and camera manufacturers, mobile PC manufacturers and handheld device developers, consumer electronics manufacturers, and even car manufacturers.”
From IBM’s Is Bluetooth Wi-Fi? here >
http://www-106.ibm.com/developerworks/wireless/library/wi-net.html?loc=dwmain
Wi-Fi is, “Short for wireless fidelity and is meant to be used generically when referring of any type of 802.11 network, whether 802.11b, 802.11a, dual-band, etc.”
From internetnews.com here >
http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/W/Wi_Fi.html
And
“Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are both wireless networking standards that provide connectivity via radio waves. The main difference: Bluetooth’s primary use is to replace cables, while Wi-Fi is largely used to provide wireless, high-speed access to the Internet or a local area network.”

All other news sources & the companies are reporting that it is Bluetooth.
You’re right, Wi-Fi is a generic term for all types of 802.11 networks.
And Bluetooth is IEEE 802.15.1.
