Giant waves threaten UK

p2pnet.net OT News:- Is Britain sinking?

No – but the coastline seems to be.

Rocks the size of Transit vans are being ripped from cliff faces and transported up to 50 yards inland in exposed areas such as Shetland, Orkney and the Western Isles, says a report in the Daily Telegraph here, going on:

“Piles of large boulders found inland behind cliffs were displaced by storm waves rather than by tsunamis (a series of waves generated by volcanic eruptions or earthquakes), landslides or sea level changes, as previously believed.

“Jim Hanson, a coastal geomorphologist at the University of Glasgow, told delegates at the International Geographical Union congress in the city yesterday that the erosion was expected to accelerate because sea levels are rising and the coastline is sinking.”

The drilling ship Schiehallion based to the west of Shetland has been damaged several times recently by giant waves and is now being designed with tougher plates, adds the Telegraph.

“Personally I would advise people not to picnic on the top of the cliffs facing deep water, at least not in a storm,” a Guardian story here has Hanson saying.

In another OT wave story, ocean waves as large as ten-storey apartment blocks are now accepted as a leading cause of large ship sinkings.

Too bad there aren’t any pictures of said rocks.. would be pretty amazing to see too. Does anybody happen to know of some pictures someplace of said rocks perhaps?
