Bugmenot is back

p2pnet.net News:- “RIP, bugmenot.com – Bugmenot appears to have been taken offline by its creators. The site served as a clearinghouse for shared passwords to registration-required websites. Subscription-based website owners despised it, hassle-hating ‘net users loved it. No word on what happened (bugmenot peeps: talk to me, honey), but I’d bet dollars to downloads that lawyers were involved. (via MeFi)”

Thus wrote boingboing here on August 18.

But worrynot. Bugmenot – created to “bypass the login of web sites that require compulsory registration and/or the collection of personal/demographic information (such as the New York Times)” – is back.

And our thanks to Andy Nonymous-Reader.

Freedom and free information is being slowly taken away. Thus another chapter hath been written in the ever-growing book. I used this site a few times, I think it was for a new york times article. Makes no sense to go through a sign-up just to read one article

BUT heres the neverending cycle: They’re (New york times website) benefiting by harvesting email addresses, making money selling them to spammers, and then the new york times will write up another article complaining “There’s too much spam out there!” and “Spammer convicted and sentanced to 2 years in jail!” But failing to mention that they too, are a part of the system.

on many of these sites, including the NY Times, it’s ususally not hard to guess some username/password combinations of variations of – what else – things like “guest” and “password”

I also recommend a “throwaway” temporary email address available at mailinator.com. They don’t even require you to sign up for anything.

It has been working all day. Just had a bit of downtime.
