Swedish Pirates cruise to Europe Parliament

p2pnet news view | P2P | Politics:- “Support for the Swedish Pirate Party surged following the Pirate Bay verdict and today it became the third largest political party in the country,” said PoorButHappy on May 8 in a post accompanied by pic in the right.

Today, Swedish Pirates — the official ones — have the support of 7.9% of Swedish voters, up from 3.4% from a week earlier, says a Demoskop poll conducted between May 13 and yesterday, quoted by The Local.

That’s still well behind Sweden’s opposition Social Democrats with 35.9 % and prime minister Fredrik Reinfeldt’s conservative Moderate Party with 24.1%, says the story.

But, “it could be enough for it to clinch at least one seat in the European Parliament, on the heels of the April 17 conviction in Sweden of the three founders of the unrelated file-sharing website The Pirate Bay,” it says, with Pirate Party leader Rick Falkvinge stating

“Of course it is fantastic, but nothing is clear until the votes are counted.

“It is still up to all those who care about basic civil rights and these fundamental values to go out and vote.”

Founded in 2006, the Pirate Party took 0.6% of the vote in Sweden’s last general election in 2006, adds The Local.

some places in sweden where you can pre-vote to said election actually removed the pirate party ballots or in other way made it difficult or impossible to vote for the pirate party. more info (albeit in swedish) can be found at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANSjR_8ydyo .

that said, i voted for the pirate party successfully.
