Time Warner to dump AOL
p2pnet news view P2P:- In the days of yore, surfers who knew their way around avoided AOL (America Online, as it was) like the plague.
Then it was swallowed whole by Time Warner “in what has become one of the least successful mergers in history,” as the BBC sums it up, and surfers who know their way around still avoid it like the plague.
But now, even Time Warner has had enough.
AOL will be dumped — sorry, spun off, as a separate company by the end of this year, says the Beeb, going on, “Time Warner will buy the 5% of AOL it does not already own from Google, then offer the firm to its own shareholders.”
“We believe AOL will have a better opportunity to achieve its full potential as a leading independent internet company,” the story has Time Warner chief executive Jeff Bewkes saying with a straight face.

UPDATE - and as RW suggests below, “Go see this guy canceling his AOL account.” It’s unphknbelieveable.

Well, since I haven’t met anyone personally who has used AOL within the last decade, I’m not sure that this is really all that valuable to them. Maybe I just don’t live in that unfortunate part of the country.
Anyway, I think they’re wasting their money — they’d be generally much better off if they just dumped the whole prospect and started a brand new ISP. The name is tainted, and won’t be trusted by those who know their way around even if they actually *do* fix their problems.
