Cinema search victim gets $10,000
p2pnet news view | P2P | Movies:- A Montreal theatre owner has been ordered to pay a woman $10,000 after an employee rifled through her handbag.
Instead of a camcorder to be used for ‘pirating’ Shrek the Third, the employee found only, “smuggled snacks and birth control pills,” says CTV.
In 2007, Julie Berthiaume took her two young daughters to see the movie at the Marche Central Guzzo.
She wasn’t overjoyed when staff, “rummaged through her bag with both hands in a very rough manner,” said p2pnet shortly after the incident.
She said she didn’t have a camera and wasn’t going to pirate the movie and with that in mind, later launched a lawsuit for $60,000 in damages.
“Staff at the theatre were searching customers’ bags for video equipment that could be used for movie piracy,” said the story, adding a Quebec court ruled the search was an invasion of privacy, ordering cinema owner Vincent Guzzo to pay the $10K.

Wait till we blackmail her like our brothers in the south do!
She will be happy if she only has to pay us this 10k when we accuse her of downloading and/or making available the soundtrack of shrek III via online media distribution system!

When I was driving in Montreal this weekend, they gave a more vivid account of what happened on the radio.
The cinema guy started rummaging through the oldest daughters purse and started pulling everything out, in front of everyone.
The mom was pissed.
Then the cinema guy pulls out the oldest daughters birth control pills, in front of everyone.
The mom had no clue her daughter was on the pill and got even more pissed.
This in turn led to some colorful conversation between mom and daughter.
This story on the Montreal radio station was followed by a lawyer taking calls on what to do if anyone invades your privacy in such a manner, be it via a cinema like this, or some guard at Wal-Mart wanting to look in your bags.
Then they went through some case histories and were encouraging callers who called in with similar stories during this radio show on how to get money out of these stores for invading their privacy, or holding you back against your will etc etc.
This actually happened to my sister at the Bell Centre in Montreal. The guards put their hands into her coat pockets pulling everything out and to look for what they said were “snacks”.
No one has a right to start pillaging into your stuff. Especially some guard pulling out stuff in front of everyone.
On the radio the lawyer said this is an offense, but people are just not aware.
