First ‘DoS for money’ case

p2pnet.net News:- Six California men have been charged in the first case involving DoS (denial of service) attacks for commercial advantage, says the US Department of Justice.

Jay R. Echouafni, ceo of Orbit Communication Corporation in Massachusetts, and a business partner hired computer hackers in Arizona, Louisiana, Ohio, and the UK to launch “relentless computer attacks against Orbit Communication’s online competitors,” says a statement.

“These sustained attacks allegedly began in October 2003 and caused the victims to lose over $2 million in revenue and costs associated with responding to the attacks,” says the DoJ.

“In addition, it is alleged that the attacks temporarily disrupted other commercial and government sites hosted by the victims’ internet service providers.”

Paul Ashley, 30, of Powell, Ohio, is "named in a separate criminal complaint as Echouafni’s go-between in arranging two of the attacks," says Kevin Poulsen in a Security Focus report here, continuing that Ashley was the network administrator of the Web and IRC hosting company CIT/FooNet, "run from his home, which was shuttered sometime after being raided by the FBI last February.

"According to an FBI affidavit filed in the case, Echouafni was a client of CIT/FooNet’s hosting services when he made a deal with Ashley, then the owner, in October of last year. Echouafni allegedly paid Ashley $1,000 to snuff out two competing websites that he claimed had stolen some of his content and were staging DDoS attacks against his company."

Echouafni was indicted by a federal grand jury this week on multiple charges of conspiracy and causing damage to protected computers.

Orbit is a satellite equipment sales, service and programming company founded in 1988.
