Sony joins UMG, Google, in Vevo

p2pnet news view | Advertising:- One of the most interesting things about Vivendi Universal, EMI, Warner Music and Sony Music efforts to convince music lovers there’s a viable online corporate music business is: their share of Net music is miniscule. And yet it’s apparently enough for them to be throwing away hundreds of millions of dollars launching, and then dropping, websites, on promotion, marketing, advertising, and so on.

Imagine what it’d be like for them if they were to work with fans, P2P application innovators, up-and-coming musicians? Instead, they’re solidly locked into the course they started in 2003 when they first tried to gain control of the MP3 music sharing phenomenon by suing music lovers.

Enter Vevo, an advertising scheme jointly touted by the biggest of the Big 4 labels, Universal, and the largest of the large online adcos, Google.

Eventually, AOL, MTV and Yahoo, “will embed Universal’s videos from Vevo rather than licensing the content directly from the labels,” said Wired of the project, going on but in the end, “this is another in a string of deals in which major labels have sued a social media network, settled, licensed, then gained equity in the service”.

“We believe that at launch, Vevo will already have more traffic than any other music video site in the United States and in the world,” the story had Universal boss Doug Morris stating.

But this isn’t a case of sharing and caring, said p2pnet, adding »»»

“The site will be wholly owned by Universal,” according to Wired, going on to quote a Google spokeswoman as stating:

“Universal owns the site, but Google/YouTube is providing the technology. We will be sharing revenue with Universal on both Vevo and on YouTube. Other labels could join Vevo; they are in talks currently.”

However the arrangement is carved up, it’ll amount to a virtual monopoly between the largest video site and music company.

Now Sony has jumped in and the group is looking for rich and stupid marks, “to join as equity partners in VEVO, which is expected to launch later this year,” says Digital media Wire.

Yeah. A pretty safe bet, considering there aren’t many notable sites devoted solely to music videos. But there’s no way in hell it will match the view count of music videos on YouTube.

It’ll go belly up after a while.
