DMCA League of Nations

p2pnet.net News:- Cogeco, a Canadian ISP, seems to be sending its customers warnings under America’s DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) about Swedish BitTorrent tracker www.supernova.org.

Interesting, that – a Canadian company getting heavy via a US ‘law’ that has carries zero weight in Canada.

But then the CRIA (Canadian Music Industry Association of America) does it all the time.

Anyway, according to a dslreports post here:

“In case you haven’t seen any threads on this, I recieved a forwarded email from Cogeco that was originally from the MPAA (I think). Basically it suggested that Cogeco limit access to the site www.suprnova.org and that I was sharing the movie RAGING BULL online via BitTorrent. That’s not entirely true. Although I tried to download the movie, the download speed was so slow I stopped the DL about 20 mins in. So while it’s true I shared that movie, I really only shared about 2MB worth for about 20 mins. Whatever.”

Yep. Whatever. heh.

And it gets even worse (or better, depending on your point of view).

One Dennis L. Wilson, Esq, of KEATS McFARLAND & WILSON, LLP contacted the ThePirateBay.org, waving the DMCA at it, as boingboing says here.

Supernova doesn’t actually host anything, but even if it did:

SWEDEN ISN’T IN THE US !!!!! - as anakata delicately points out below.

AND NEITHER IS CANADA !!!!! – Cogecon and American views to the contrary notwithstanding.

As you may or may not be aware, Sweden is not a state in the United States of America. Sweden is a country in northern Europe. Unless you figured it out by now, US law does not apply here. For your information, no Swedish law is being violated.

Please be assured that any further contact with us, regardless of medium, will result in

Go fuck yourself.

One Response to “DMCA League of Nations”

  1. Reader's Write Says:

    eh,
with enough money and political power, i’m just waiting for the all out ground war invasion of countries not currently controlled by the USA and DMCA. Killing men for oil, next it will be killing men for COPYRIGHTED PROPERTIES, ‘Lets invade Sweden, those bastards, stealing our properties, with thier damn wooden shoes and windmills, the American people(meaning only MPAA/RIAA/big business) standing united demand the total destruction of all nongiveuswhatwewantdowhatwesay countries!’ sweet lord, did someone flip over 2 pages at once? Hell, the RIAA and the MPAA own everything, and they make it perfectly clear they are not ones to share thier toys with anyone, whether a 12 year old girl or a grandmother, this whole planet is becoming one twisted joke, and i just plain dont get it. God(or Allah, or whomever) needs to do some serious smiting on some asses.
    sorry, monkeyrantmode-off.

  2. Reader's Write Says:

“‘Lets invade Sweden, those bastards, stealing our properties, with thier damn wooden shoes and windmills…..”

    Thats DENMARK you smacktard.

  3. Reader's Write Says:

Try again, ever hear of Dutch klompen? As for smacktard, dump the phony geekspeak and get back on the same planet as the rest of us, then you might understand culture and geography. By the way, the Dutch live in the Netherlands or Holland as it is also called and are commonly known as the originators of the “wooden” shoe, although the use of these shoes is known throughout the scandinavian countries which includes sweden as well as denmark. Jeez, the internet is here to provide all this information..why are people too lazy to research before they post?

  4. Reader's Write Says:

    lol

  5. Reader's Write Says:

Yeah, there are called a Klompen cause they go clomp clomp when you walk in them.

I prefer Dutch Chocolate to Wooden Shoes, termites are a bitch.

  6. Reader's Write Says:

Piratebay.org and leechernova … oops I meant suprnova.org are two seperate tracker sites! By stating”, “One Dennis L. Wilson, Esq, of KEATS McFARLAND & WILSON, LLP contacted the ThePirateBay.org, waving the DMCA at it, as boingboing says here … Supernova doesn’t actually host anything, but even if it did: SWEDEN ISN’T IN THE US !!!!!” and then quoting the piratebay letter(s) you’ve left the impression that somehow these two instances are inter-connected, they’re not. Suprnova uses a collection of mirror sites to host torrents. PirateBay is what it is.

What happened to the cogeco user happens all the time. Nothing new. If anything what’s new is that BT is becoming a target for the RIAA/MPAA, that BayTSP has been using BT to collect information. Was bound to happen, takes one step out of the process for these guys. The BT clients display IP’s for them, whether a user is seeding or actively downloading etc and really it makes their case for them. There isn’t a doubt that the user is sharing like there is with kluzaa.

Amazing how arrogant these organizations and the lawyers they hire are …

  7. Reader's Write Says:

No, Sweden and Canada are NOT the USA.

But how long before it becomes this way? We already have to listen to their LIES in the movie theatre about movie “piracy” (read: Copyright Infringement) Talk about barking up the wrong tree. I mean, what moron harasses the people who are PAYING TO SEE THE MOVIE?

It’s just a matter of time people! By hook or by crook, they’ll keep on trying. Unfortunately, we don’t have an EFF.ORG in Canada

  8. Reader's Write Says:

They’ve got some even better treats in the Netherlands…
That is if you like that type of thing…

  9. Reader's Write Says:

This is just another glaring example on how the world is such a complicated and corrupt place.

The united states is not the only place in the world that has a arrogant and greedy approach to property ownership.

It don’t take a genius to fiqure out that the copyright and patent law in the united states is about 150 years behind times.

Life was a lot simpler in those days considering the only mass communications medium was the newspaper and the telegraph.

There was was not much business competition in most things and the era was full of business monopolies.

In the meantime the phonograph was invented around the turn of the last century and for many years the entertainment industry never had to worry about people pirating copyrighted material.

That all changed when the cassette deck and vcr was invented.

The price of recording equipment had dropped to the point that the common masses could afford it.

The entertainment industry longs for those days of yesteryear when they had complete control of their intellectual property.

They don’t what to change their retail business model and they are trying awfully hard to buy off the us congress with kickbacks and bribes to pass the induce act.

If people on the corporate end of things were not so greedy, what about all those people in the retail music business overcharging for movies and cds and being a class a buttfuck artist?

This applies to cd imports and special orders.

There was this music store that charged $25.00 for any special order regardless what the list price.

I can see why pirating in general is so rampant. The mpaa says i can’t back legally back up a movie on computer.

    FUCK THEM !!

    I do it any way.

I still don’t get people who think if you make backup copies of cds and dvds ,you are stealing.

My retort is i can’t steal what’s legally mine in the first place.

There are really fucking stupid people out there who don’t even raise an eyebrow when the cost of a dvd or cd keeps going up and they still buy things that are overinflated.

W.C. FIELDS used to have have a saying;there is a sucker born every minute.

It’s no riddle why the record industry likes preying on young kids is because most young squirts don’t have a clue about the value of money.

Imagine that, the record is “inducing” young whippersnappers to buy all that perverted stuff on cds so they can corrupt them and pervert them with crazy ideas.

To me this is the supreme irony and the ultimate example of hypocracy.

Double ditto for people in the motion picture industry.

    What a world!!

  10. Reader's Write Says:

    *hehe*

  11. Reader's Write Says:

(im the first poster, err, the anonymous smacktard.)
i suppose i could say ‘that all my inteligence reports indicate a manufacturing plant producing wooden shoes of mass destruction inside an underground windmill facility (taken by infra-xrayed satelite photos) deep below the center of sweden. we have confirmed the presence of clogens and windmills, we shall invade because it’s in the swedes best interest to be invaded. they want it.’ but that would be just as stupid as all the replies about what a stupid thing it was to post in the first place. you people are missing my point(and i suppose proving my point in the process) that it takes so little to make such small issues turn into such a big damn deal by a few people with a few computers. I had meant to imply how much i am afraid for the future regarding mpaa/riaa/the protection of intelectual property rights, how easily the various countries laws will be made, eroding privacy, and soon ‘1984′ would actually be 20years outdated, and 2005 will be a paranoid schitzophrenic’s wet dream/worst nightmare. going to war for oil? eh, ok. going to war over ‘david hasselhoff sings the best of david hasselhoff’ digital copyright enforcement, man, just shoot me in the head right now.

eh, i guess this is the part where someone points out my spelling errors.

  12. Reader's Write Says:
