Thinnest of the thin
p2pnet.net News:- From both looks and design perspectives, the new iMac G5 is nice.
With typical hooplah, Apple bills it around the world as the World’s thinnest desktop and indeed, at $1,299 for the low-end model, it integrates the entire computer right into the flat panel display.
It comes with 17″ or 20″ active matrix widescreen LCDs and G5 processors running up to 1.8 GHz, Apple promises. But having been chastised for claiming, last year, that its Power Mac G5 was “The world’s fastest,” etc, it carries the caveat, “Actual speed will vary based on range from the base station, environmental conditions and other factors.”
Launched during the Apple Expo in Paris, France, it has optional AirPort Extreme and Bluetooth wireless modules and the 17″ version has either a 1.8 GHz PowerPC G5 processor and a SuperDrive for “burning professional-quality DVDs”, or a 1.6 GHz PowerPC G5 processor and a Combo drive for watching DVD movies and “burning CDs”.
The 20″ model has a 1.8 GHz PowerPC G5 processor and a SuperDrive. With a completely redesigned system architecture, the new iMac G5 now offers up to a 600 MHz front-side bus, 400 MHz DDR memory expandable to 2GB, AGP 8X graphics and 7200 rpm Serial ATA drives up to 250GB. The new iMac G5 comes standard with high-performance NVIDIA graphics with dedicated video memory for outstanding graphics performance and realistic game play.
Pro-quality DVDs, eh? And CDs, too. Will the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) and/or RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) sue Apple for putting temptation in the way of all those wicked file sharers and copyright ‘pirates’, one wonders?
Anyway, Mac OS X version 10.3 ‘Panther’ is pre-installed.
The new iMac G5 line will begin shipping worldwide in mid-September.
The $1,299 version includes:

Didn’t Sony try this? A widescreen all in one thin computer with a fold up keyboard. Didn’t go anywhere…
