Apple FlatMac

p2pnet.net News:- Launched yesterday, Apple’s new super-thin iMac G5 may be, “a unique package of design, power and ease of use”, but will that be enough?

That’s the question posed by Forrester Research item on CNET News here.

But because the FlatMac lacks both Wi-Fi and a TV tuner card the answer is No, says Forrester.

“While Apple does great business in selling AirPort cards and AirPort Extreme Wi-Fi base stations, this should not have stopped it from building Wi-Fi directly into every new iMac – even Bluetooth would have been a start.” says the commentary, continuing:

“Better still would have been a software option to turn this machine into a full Wi-Fi access point … The lack of this connectivity means that Apple has missed an opportunity to build on its AirPort Express foundations and rule the roost in bottom-up networking.”

And there’s more.

“Would including a TV tuner card have broken the bank?” – asks Forrester rhetorically. “Digital video recorder functionality is becoming increasingly interesting to technology-literate consumers.”

Furthermore, “Microsoft is forging ahead with its Windows XP Media Center Edition, looking to build on lessons from the past year. In the new iMac, Apple presents us with a fabulous living-room-compatible unit with an excellent display and lots of storage designed for digital media – but doesn’t allow for connectivity to the broadcast network.”

The Forrester prediction is probably correct, the loyalty and devotion of Applers notwithstanding.

Apple folks seem to be willing to bite on anything Apple dishes out, but when it comes to computer users, they’re very much in the minority.

And nor is Apple’s design as ‘unique’ as it may appear to be.

As a p2pnet Reader’s Write says here, “Didn’t Sony try this? A widescreen all in one thin computer with a fold up keyboard. Didn’t go anywhere…”

About 6 years ago I once saw a similar type of computer for sale in CompUSA, made by a company called Monorail. It was a lot bulkier and had only a tiny screen area, but otherwise a similar design to this Apple. I have not seen anything like it since.
