p2pnet news view RIAA | P2P:- Jammie Thomas-Rasset isn’t the defendant in the one and only case Vivendi Universal, EMI, Warner Music and Sony Music’s RIAA has managed to get into a civil court room.
Rather, she’s the most visible of the 40,000 or so innocent Americans, including very young children, who are being victimised by the Big 4 corporate music labels as part of their plan to gain total control of how, and by whom, music is shared online.
And today, as I write this, she and her lawyers, Kiwi Camara and Joe Sibley, are telling a Minnesota jury how it really is.
If Recording Industry vs The People’s Ray Beckerman is correct, it’s all but over.
But even if he’s right, terrible damage has been done to thousands of people and families across America and whatever the outcome, it can never be repaired.
Jammie’s husband, Chad, is forced to sit and watch while teams of highly paid lawyers try to prove his wife is one of millions, if we are to believe the labels, of illegal online distributors of copyrighted music whose activities are robbing the multi-billion-dollar labels of their rightful dues.
It is, of course, complete nonsense. But a lot of people have been sucked in by the constant RIAA barrage of lies and half-truths issued, largely, by RIAA boss Mitch Bainwol, his #2, Cary Sherman (top), and spinsters Cara Duckworth and Jonathan Lamy on behalf of the corporate music companies.
“This is my wife so obviously I am paying close attention to everything thats going on,” says Jammie’s husband, Chad, in a p2pnet Reader’s Write.
That’s him in the lead picture , together with Jammie and her nine-month-old baby Tarent, and, left to right, Christian, her four-year-old stepson, Tyler, who’ll be 15 next month, and Triston, who’ll be 13 in August.

Their campaign to sue innocent people and instill fear in the hearts of people around the world is pathetic and that our justice system allows this infuriates me.
They have no idea how many families lives that they are ruining.
Jammie has a job like every other normal person and has to be away from work for this pathetic extortion attempt by the big labels.
We are a family of 6 living on one income so this is really hurting our family.
All those people that say she should have to pay are ignorant, I have read so many posts where people do not know the facts and flame her.
To those who support shutting down this campaign our family thanks you deeply. I do beleive that pirates should be stopped and always have, but the tactics the RIAA are using, seeking out so many innocents, HAS TO STOP!!!

No discussion is possible with terrorists. So before we can consider what we can do with the entertainment industry in this world wide computer network age we have to get ride of the curent entertainemtn parasite.
Even if Jammie win this, as I hope she will, we will not put our guns back into the rack and of course the boycott shall continue!

In say ten or twenty years, we will look back and think that it was really crazy/dumb to sue ordinary people for sharing stuff online. I mean, I do it, everybody does it and it’s not going to change. More importantly, it’s good to do so. That being said, who’s going to repair all the harm caused to Jammie? Hey, she just shared a few songs online like millions of us and she’s being attacked, harassed and intimated by multinational corporations which use laws that were written to target commercial, enterprise-scale copyright violations, at a time when Internet was pure science-fiction. Now, if that’s not terrorism, what is it?

Sadly this case, regardless of outcome, isn’t going to change the RIAA/MPAA tactics of “sue em all”. Look at their history.. their direction remains focused on blaming the ppl pulling instead of pushing for more quality from their artists.
Consider this.. (using RIAA/MPAA logic)
Why do people like popcorn. Smell, taste, texture, good memories from past experiences.
If I were to cook popcorn and a little child (we’ll call him Timmy) were to come by and smell the aroma. If Timmy walks out of the store without buying the popcorn, he’s stolen 25% of why people purchase popcorn.
Sure, Timmy might come back and buy the popcorn because we all know once you smell it, you have to have it (if your a popcorn lover) but it might take him a range of time before he has the money.
Oops, too bad for Timmy here come the RIAA/MPAA cops, knocking down his door and taking his lungs to use in court.. Oh, he doesn’t have the money to pay for court any more than he had the money to buy the product he stole? Too bad, let’s sue him!!
Timmy comes to court with only the defense that he had just smelled the popcorn and had intention to buy a lot of popcorn some day when he had enough money but he needed to pay for stupid things like rent, electric bill, etc, instead..

Well, Timmy goes bankrupt, loses everything he ever had.. all from being interested in a product but not having the money to buy it right when he wanted to.
I guess that’s life.

Hmm, too extreme right? But now let’s take this into a more similar platform.

Timmy makes $2000/mo. Timmy, spends $900/mo on rent, $300/mo on his car, $200/mo on food, $150/mo on car insurance, $300/mo on gasoline, $100/mo on his power bill, $50 for his phone/internet bill.. oops, Timmy has $0 at the end of every month like most people do.
Timmy cant afford cable so he watches movies on hulu and when he drives his car reallllllly easy he can save $10-20 a month that he can spend on “fun stuff” like music or dvd’s. Heck he’s even gone months just eating “Ramen” just so he can afford to buy two or three movies.. but now he really hates Ramen.
Obviously Timmy wants to make sure if he buys a cd or dvd that it’s pretty darn good because he can realistically only buy about 6 a year. Timmy loads up Kazaa and downloads a few songs he thinks he liked from the radio… yup he liked them, so he’ll save up for them for the end of the month when he gets his paycheck and can buy that kewl hawt cd from WalMart.
A week passes ..*Someone knocks on the door… Timmy answers…. Some kid hands him a letter and tells him he’s been served and to have a nice day*.. Damn, I guess he won’t be able to bring an attorney.
Timmy comes to court with only the defense that he had just downloaded the two songs from the cd he’d heard on the radio and wanted to make sure he was thinking of the right songs and that he really wanted to buy that specific cd before he bought the cd with his limited funds… He’d had full intention to buying the cd when he had enough money at the end of the month.

This circle of events does not change anything. Most people that download only do so to try a product, not to replace it. Most people that download ARE customers but they’re tired of being screwed over by buying a cd and having it consist of mainly CRAP along with the two songs worth listening to.
MPAA/RIAA – stop faking charts and numbers. Your business functioned like a leader to our economy and nothing more – a sign that our economy was in trouble because people were not buying as many NEW products.. but let me point out that cd/dvd RESALES at ‘used’ stores going up at the same time because they were/are more AFFORDABLE.

I don’t know why I rant occasionally, it’s not like they’re listening..
But just the same, that’s my 10 cents.
