‘Alien signals’ story debunked

p2pnet.net OT News:- It’s now official. The only wierd alien life-forms currently available to us Earthians live in Hollywood.

And you can take that any way you want.

Yesterday, the UK’s New Scientists hazarded the opinion that mysterious radio signals picked up three times by a telescope in Puerto Rico might have originated with, Yep, ALIENS !!!!!

But, “A rash of reports in recent days that SETI@home has discovered a likely signal from an alien civilization are highly exaggerated, says SETI@home Chief Scientist Dan Werthimer of U.C. Berkeley,” says the Planetary Society here, going on:

“The storm was initiated by an article in New Scientist magazine, which reported about SETI@home’s most promising candidate signal to date, and speculated about its possible origins.

“Like all of SETI@home’s 5 billion potential signals, this candidate, labeled SHGb02+14a, was assigned a numerical score representing the statistical likelihood that it is indeed an intelligent extraterrestrial signal. Its relatively high score placed it among the 200 ‘top candidates’ selected for the targeted reobservation sessions that took place in March of 2003 at the Arecibo Radio Observaotry.

“Of all the candidates targeted in the sessions, however, SHGb02+14a was one of the very few to be confirmed during the reobservations, and the only one whose score following the sessions actually went up.”

Now you know – thanks to a p2pnet Reader’s Write here.

The Alien Signals story may have been debunked, but other reports indicate there may be life on Mars.

“NASA’s Spirit rover has begun taking some amazing pictures of the Martian landscape,” says jessey.net, going on:.

“Officials were stunned, when the solar-powered vehicle sent back a picture indicating that life may indeed exist on the red planet.”

Amazing.

The alieb life forms aren’t only in Hollywood, believe me ; p

The scientists said the signal was the most promising candidate for being artificial, but most seemed to think it was probably a natural phenomenon that has not been detected previously. Don’t blame the scientists for the sins of headline writers…
