GooPhone has Canadians’ numbers
p2pnet news view Mobiles | Advertising:- Advertising juggernaut Google is on the verge of having Canadians hog-tied.
But in a good way.
Good for Google, that is.
“Rogers Communications Inc. will launch two mobile devices next month running on Google Inc.’s Android operating system, ” said the Toronto Star last month.
It’ll, “launch the Android-powered HTC Dream and Magic smartphones on its network, but did not provide details on pricing,” it sayid.
Well, the GooPhone is here. And from all appearances, it’ll have anyone who uses it tethered every which way.
The Magic is one of only two phones currently available in Canada to sport Google Inc.’s new Android operating system (the other being the HTC Dream), says the Ottawa Citizen, going on, “When the Magic is first activated, it asks the user to log into his Google account and »»»
Doing so will automatically transfer all of the user’s contacts from his or her Gmail account into the phone. It will also give users access to Google’s entire suite of online applications including Google Maps, Google Talk and YouTube, as well as Google’s popular calendar and Internet search functionality.
So it’ll have your phone number and, hence, other goodies, with all that implies.
But, “Perhaps the most compelling feature about the device is its ability to access the Android Marketplace,” says the story, adding:
“Much like the iPhone’s App Store, the marketplace is where users will find hundreds of applications for the device. But at the Marketplace, Android’s applications are free. Developers have created everything from barcode readers that let you compare the prices of items available at every store within a 32-kilometre radius …
And you thought phones were for making phone calls.
You can get an Android GooPhone one by tying yourself down with a Roger’s three year contract.
But Rogers won’t be paying to get you into scam — sorry, plan.
You’ll have to pay it —- $150.
But what’ s really amazing is: thousands of people will undoubtedly fall for it.

My sister got the first one at my local mall. already cracked open the SDK.
I recommend the HTC dream android to anyone. Ive spent hrs seeing what it can do (im impressed). If your a savvy java fan you will find this a breeze to develop for. The android market has tons of apps already. The only problem is the rogers contract as stated already by Jon. Im glad im not stuck with a phone for 3 yrs but if I was going to pick 1 it would definitely be an android phone.
That bar code reader app works tested it several times, though I don’t see much of a point to it.

i work at a local rogers as the wireless rep- already had tons of people asking about it, but rogers is only giving them to stores that can ‘prove they can sell phones’- for some reason making it *difficult* to find one on the north shore. oh yeah and prices will be going up $50 in about a month and a half, but you didn’t hear it from me =)
