IBM power adapter hazard
p2pnet.net News:- Flaws in 56 watt AC adapters for some IBM Notebook computers mean the power units can, “overheat, cause damage to the circuit board and melt through the housing, which poses a fire and electrical shock hazard to consumers,” say the US Consumer Product Safety Commission and IBM, issuing recalls for the $55 ACPAs.
Six reports of incidents including “minor property damage” have been received by IBM, but no injuries have been reported.
“Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed,” says the CPSC.
Some 553,000 units, mainly IBM ThinkPad i Series, 390 and 240 Series, and s Series notebooks, were shipped.
The adapters have three hollow pins at the AC inlet and part number 02K6549 on a label on the top of the unit. The IBM logo appears on top of the unit. Adapters with solid pins aren’t included in the recall.
US and Canadian users can call IBM at 1-800-410-5629 between 8 am and 8 pm ET Monday through Friday, or log on to IBM’s replacement unit Web site at www.adapterprogram.com
International customers should go to http://www.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-4HWSE3.

I have the defective AC adapter. It gotten so hot, that it melted and damaged the ac adapter port of my IBM thinkpad to the point that the entire system just died out. Does anyone know if IBM will replaced the damaged out-of-waranty system also? What good is it if IBM replaces the AC adapter if I can’t even get the entire system to work?
