it’s my unprovable opinion that they have been deliberately seeding
p2p networks with malicious virii and trojans for years.
---------------

Of course they have. It's been one of their kept secrets. However word of it got out when they were employing Loudeye. Loudeye was one of those opportunistic businesses like Mediasentry. What Loudeye did was seed bad files on the various P2P of the time, like DC, Soulseek, eDonkey, Limewire, etc. They would put out files that had static in them.

The other thing they did, was take advantage of M$'s sloppy programming. When you got a protected song, it would have a license tab, in the metafile. Windows would accept the license contact as default bonefide. So Loudeye would add a trojan when the song went to contact the licensing info on the tab. They would then feed a trojan to you. This went on until M$ finally closed that hole. Shortly after that, Loudeye went out of business. It was in the news at the time. Do a search, the info should still be around.

"When a barman sells a drink to someone who is already drunk there is a potential for the barman to be charged in the event that the drunk then goes outside and, under the influence, runs someone over in his (or her) car."

Is that serious? Then they should start charging guns sellers and car factories in the case that someone might do something bad.

Because ED2K indexes file-hashes (which can correlate to multiple filenames) one problem that often results is that if a single person sharing a common porn file renames it to a commonly-requested (non-porn) title, any search for that title will result in a high amount of false sources, even if only one (false) filename (out of perhaps 100 valid porn-filenames) for that filehash matches the search query.

It's important to learn how to use ED2K to avoid these mis-named files, which exist everywhere in the ED2K network, and always have.

Using eMule:

hit the "Transfers" button to view the download queue

right-click on a file being downloaded, then click "Details"

click the "name" tab

(this will list all the different filenames that users have given this file, and the relative abundance of each filename. If you see a lot of porn-related filenames in the list, then it's probably a porn file.)

Besides identifying fakes, checking the alternate filenames of a download also helps to identify movies and TV shows that are dubbed in a foreign language. This procedure needs to be done for EVERY file that does not come from a trusted source -- and that's anything you find using the ED2K search engine. Otherwise, you'll be guaranteed to download a lot of mis-named files!

Sounds like something they would do, after all, it's my unprovable opinion that they have been deliberately seeding
p2p networks with malicious virii and trojans for years.

They already know that they can't be definitively traced by their own experiences in court.
The only reason they have been able to do what they do in court for so long is their deep pockets.

" Do they have the rights to distribute those clips? "

Doesn't matter. It's always been "Do as I say, Not as I do" when it comes to the big media.
Ask Rafael Venegas. (sp ? )
