Bluetooth meets 802.11
p2pnet.net News:- Fourteen Wi-Fi service providers, infrastructure suppliers and handset manufacturers have banded together as Unlicensed Mobile Access to publish open specifications aimed at extending mobile voice and data services over Wireless LANs.
UMA technology provides access to GSM and GPRS mobile services over unlicensed spectrum technologies, including Bluetooth and 802.11, they say here, going on:
"By deploying UMA technology, service providers can enable subscribers to roam and handover between cellular networks and public and private unlicensed wireless networks using dual-mode mobile handsets. With UMA, subscribers receive a consistent user experience for their mobile voice and data services as they transition between networks."

UMA members include Alcatel, AT&T Wireless Services, BT PLC, Cingular Wireless LLC, Ericsson AB, Kineto Wireless, Motorola, Nokia, Nortel Networks, O2, Rogers Wireless, Siemens AG, Sony Ericsson, and T-Mobile USA.
