RealNetworks ‘cheap’ deal ends
p2pnet.net News:- Punters who for some reason want to buy half-price Big Music ‘product’ from the RealNetworks music ’store’ will soon be out of luck.
The “Download selected songs for only 49ยข” deal ends this week and it’ll be back to a dollar per track.
Real, now locked into a battle with Apple for a piece of the paltry corporate online music business, recently offered up Harmony, an application which lets people buy from Real and then play them not only on iPod but also other portable players.
Then it temporarily cut its download price.
What’s next?
To “keep luring customers with low prices, RealNetworks will now offer 10 songs each week that will be sold for 49 cents a track,” says an IDG News Service story here, going on to quote Real senior vp Dan Sheeran as saying:
“The 10 songs will be in a list called the Rolling Stone Top 10 compiled by RealNetworks and Rolling Stone magazine.”
The Rolling Stone Top 10 is a combination of the most popular tracks from Rolling Stone’s charts as well as from RealNetworks’ download store and its Rhapsody subscription service, says IDG.

I wondered how long that teaser-rate deal would last, since Apple iTunes was barely breaking even while charging much more per download.
The new “top 10″ plan is more in keeping with traditional business sense: Take a loss on a very limited number of products, and hope the customer stays and buys more – at full price.
