Apple iTunes Hottest Girls app

p2pnet news view P2P:- Does Apple Owe Banned ‘Hottest Girls’ an Apology? and Who Exactly Is In Charge Of The App Store? Anyone?

Both questions are in fact headlines, the first from PC World, and the other from TechCrunch.

And they both refer to the Now it’s There and Now it Isn’t nudie pix (right) featured in an indie Apple iTunes application.

The girl on the left? In September last year, “Yesterday’s most popular p2pnet post featured a scantily clad iPhone girl,” said p2pnet, going on »»

Apple (or it is Rogers?) is apparently looking to boost interest in the iPhone with the help of an erotic, semi-naked model peering coyly and, it hopes, temptingly at surfers,” said our story.

But when a developer came up with a supposedly approved-by-Apple Hottest Girls app, it was there one minute, and gone the next.

“First everyone assumed Apple gasped at its oversight and barred it,” says PC World,  adding »»»

Then the developer claimed his servers were crushed by overwhelming demand and he had to retool. Then Apple made a statement published to CNN’s site:

“Apple will not distribute applications that contain inappropriate content, such as pornography. The developer of this application added inappropriate content directly from their server after the application had been approved and distributed and after the developer had subsequently been asked to remove some offensive content. This was a direct violation of the terms of the iPhone Developer Program. The application is no longer available on the App Store.”

Says TechCrunch »»»

Then more applications claiming to have nude photos started appearing. And now Apple is apparently saying none of these apps will be allowed in the App Store. But that seems to contradict its own rating system that now clearly allows for nudity.

This makes no sense. To the point where I’m not sure there is anyone actually in charge of all of this for Apple. Instead, I’m starting to think this whole system is run by a group of people, all with different thoughts on the approach Apple should take with apps. And none of whom seem to communicate with each other very well.

Stay tuned. ;)

This is why I am not buying an Iphone, first i am going to give them money for the phone, then pay the provider for the service, and then being told what i can or not can have on my phone that i just overpaid for? Silly!

  2. Drunken Economist Says:

It’s obvious to me that the AppStore operation is offshored to India. Lessee, Eucalyptus is banned because it can find the Kama Sutra via Project Gutenburg. Now a ‘too sexy for south asia’ app is banned for being, well, not as big a deal for the rest of the world.

Except for south asians or muslims. It’s fine when you have your culture, just leave it at the door when you work for mine.

This kind of stupidity is only allowed when the cost to run it is stupid cheap.

Short answer: Indians are in charge. As to whether this is ‘good’ for Apple let the results speak for themselves.

    its very simple.
Steve thinks he is god and Apple is his church itunes is his apostals and the Ipod is the bible.

So if Hottest Girls app is evil Steve must have said so

Well, you can always develop your own app or have your computer geek friend make one for you (and jailbreak your iphone for you while he’s at it), or just use the internet on the phone. I don’t see why an app removal is such a big deal. Sure, it’s inconsistent, but who’s really consistent? Especially in large groups that probably have poor communication. I’ll still be using my iPhone because it’s still the most useful personal management tool I’ve come across.

For those of you still angry about the app removal, might want to check out the video at http://www.newsy.com/videos/iporn, which has the various arguments both for and against the removal.
