Depending on the data searched for, it often gets all the way up to torrent speeds. The only real gripe I have with the system is that they have opted for a web interface as the main source of interaction with the application, instead of having native clients. The system is also based upon Azureus code (yes, pre-Vuze) and is therefore, just as memory intensive as Azureus was/is. Overall, if you've got the friends to support it, it's great. The community server feature is also really great and will truly help to get the project up and running. I’d say it’s very functional in it’s current state.
