p2pnet and ‘plagiarization’

p2pnet news view P2P:- As I’ve said before, I get about half-a-dozen or so nasty emails every month.

I’ve been accused of being anti-American because I’m “anti-corporation”. I’m Canadian, actually, but I AM anti-corporation when the term applies to legal entities which abuse people on behalf of shareholders whose only interest is in their dividends.

I’ve been accused of being unfair because I’m biased, but, “When and where have I ever said I was unbiased?” – I asked a while back, going on, “I’m as biased as they come, I’ve explicitly said so on a number of occasions, and I’ve never pretended to be otherwise.

“I’m biased against any and all efforts to kill free speech, online or off. I’m biased against the entertainment cartels as they pretend to be honest businesses trying to earn an honest living. I’m biased against their efforts to penetrate school classrooms to spread their poisonous ‘educational’ programs, claiming they represent decent standards for children to follow. I’m biased against the one-sided reporting by many, if not most, elements of the mainstream media who DO pretend to be fair, balanced and unbiased. I’m biased against attempts to flood us with tricky Net advertisements designed to force themselves past our natural barriers of free choice. And I could go on : )”

But today I had a new complaint in an email with, as usual, a proxy address.

“You have gone to far,” it says. “Today you done nothing but stolen from other sites. It is called plagiarization.”

I have to admit, today is unusual in that I’ve re-run more items than normal. In fact, it may even be a first. And there are probably two more to come.

But I never publish stories without first getting permission, if I don’t have it already, even if the stories are Creative Commons licensed. And frequently, the authors themselves send me links to their stories.

A lot of web pages just carry the first two or three sentences of a given piece, and then link back to the original.

However, p2pnet isn’t an entrepreneurial site. It’s a personal blog which tries to present specific points of view, and I believe the time to get a person to read is when they’re reading. Not ask them to go somewhere else.

So Yes. Today there’s an unusual number of complete items from elsewhere.

But as far as I’m concerned, that’s excellent, and I’d be happy to see the same thing every day.

Thanks.

And to my fellow Canadians, have a good Canada Day break. :)

Cheers!
Jon

I see somebody has been spiking their breakfast cereal with strange chemicals again (your “reader”)!

Happy Canada Day to you, too!

  2. devious204 Says:

isn’t plagiarizing when you take someone elses written work and say its your own? do they have examples of this? cuz every article i have read on here generally says something of the like “so and so said this on blah blah blah” then followed by the quote

  3. SteelWolf Says:

I don’t understand why people claim “plagiarism” when you clearly give textual and link credit to the original authors. I’ve often used your stories as jumping-off points to other sites. This reeks of corporate-news style whining that assumes people will only get their stories from the original website (where the authors can cash in via ads). In internet text, hyperlinks tie everything together. When you link, it’s the equivalent of a citation in that it identifies the source and provides a means for readers to check it themselves.

    Gah.

  4. Jon Says:

    @ SteelWolf:

    Yep. “Gah.” ;)

    (How’s the garden, Dorothy? :) )

    Cheers!

  5. Dorothy Says:

Garden: the weeds or the flowers?

Weeds are going gangbusters and currently are waiting for me to go out there and slaughter them, not to mention cutting the grass (bleagh). Having trouble motivating myself towards yardwork today!

Hope things are well at your end of the country.

  6. Jon Says:

^^ Cool. Too cool. For this time of year, anyway. ;)

    Cheers!

  7. Bob Says:

Happy Canada Day from your friends south of the border (that’s really weird to say as a US citizen!)

  8. Google Says:

lol an Email saying you are “anti-American” when you are Canadian.

    “anti-American” because I’m “anti-corporation”

Well damn. Guess most people are anti-American then.

  9. Reader's Write Says:

I’ve come to the conclusion that there is really no such thing as being “unbiased”

Take a typical court case, for instance. Lawyers for both sides are going to be lying to some degree. A journalist attempting to be balanced can simply reproduce both sets of lies, and let the smarter readers figure it out for themselves. But why not instead cut through all the bullshit (pointing out all the inconsistencies and contradictions) and present an interpretation more accurate to what’s really going on? Doing so would be “biased” of course :)

  10. IratePirate Says:

You do know it’s ok to be anti-American, right? I am and I’m a Canadian too. Mind you, I don’t completely hate Americans. They just tend to annoy the heck out of me more often than not. That’s the really great thing about freedom. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I believe it was Salman Rushdie who once said, “What is freedom of expression? Without the freedom to offend, it ceases to exist.” ;-)

  11. Jon Says:

    Hey Irate Pirate:

    How goes it?

Anyhow, I didn’t say I was anti-American. I said I’d been accused of it. Americans are OK as a people, but their politicians and policies suck big time. So do French politicians and policies. And Canadian politicians and policies. And and …

    Cheers! :)

  12. Devil's Advocate Says:

    @Jon…

So, you admit you are an anarchist, then?!

Hey Jon! It’s going alright I guess. Still struggling to get off the pain meds unfortunately. In any case I just couldn’t stay away, especially with all the interesting news of late and great debates going on around here. I’m really enjoying all the talk that ‘There’s no such thing as net neutrality’ and it’s sequel have generated. Oh, and I agree with your comments about Americans. Most are pretty decent once you get past all the indoctrination they’ve received since birth. :-)

  14. Jon Says:

    Hi IP:

“Still struggling to get off the pain meds.” It’s a hard road, but when you get to the end, it’s worth it. If you ever want to talk, email me p2pnet @ shaw dot ca. I have VoIP and Skype, so it wouldn’t be a problem.

    Cheers!
