Joost ‘reinvents’ itself
p2pnet news view | Advertising:- Back in January, 2007, billionaires Janus Friis and Niklas Zennstrom, creators of Kazaa and Skype, brought the world Joost, introducing it as the first global TV distribution platform bringing together advertisers, content owners and viewers in an, “interactive, community-driven environment”.
They said it was offering broadcast-quality content to viewers for free, ‘free’ being advertising-driven.
As The Inquirer said at the time, Joost videos are, “interrupted by different ads from 32 companies (Coca-Cola, Nike, HP, La Intella and so on), and you can expect this list to expand”.
Now it’s “reinventing” itself as a, “technology provider that will enable media companies to publish Internet video under their own brands,” in the oprocess replacing its “high-profile chief executive,” says Total Telecom.
This, “marks a dramatic shift by Joost, which was founded in 2006 but failed to live up to its early hype,” says the story, adding:
“Internet users have instead flocked to Google Inc.’s YouTube for user-generated content or sites like Hulu LLC, a joint venture between News Corp., General Electric Co.’s NBC Universal and Walt Disney Co. dedicated to TV programs.”
Volpi will be replaced as CEO by Matt Zelesko, senior vice president of engineering, says the story, adding Volpi, “a key architect of networking giant Cisco Systems Inc.’s acquisition machine during the dot-com boom,” will remain chairman of Joost’s board.
