p2pnet.net News:- California lawyers who wrangled the $1.1 billion class-action settlement with Microsoft in California wanted $258 million for their troubles.
Instead, they’ll get a measly $101 million, plus $11.5 million for expenses, says the Seattle Times, going on:.
“One reason the fee was lowered was because the lawyers relied in part on material the government gathered for its cases against Microsoft, California Superior Court Judge Paul Alvarado said in his Sept. 9 ruling.”
Californians who bought Microsoft products between 1995 and 2001 are eligible for rebates of between $5 and $29 with two-thirds of any money that’s not claimed going to CA schools to help them get buy computer gear.
Ex-MP3.com owner Michael Robertson, who now runs Linspire, formerly Lindows, has had a run-in or 10 with Microsoft.
He lost his bid to continue to call his Linux OS Lindows and for a time, used the settlement as a marketing tool.
“In connection with a legal settlement, you may be eligible for a FREE PC and allowed to purchase up to $100 worth of software paid for by Microsoft!” - he said through MSfreePC.com, a site he put up for the purpose.
The effort was, “deceptive, seriously mischaracterizes the settlement, misleads the public and encourages class members to submit improper fraudulent claims that will be denied by the Settlement Claims Administrator,” said Microsoft in a take down notice.
