That’s how Educause describes itself and it’s featured indirectly in various p2pnet stories because it’s a dissemination vehicle for the entertainment industry’s Joint Committee of the Higher Education and Entertainment Communities (JCHEEC) marketing and PR outfit.
Penn State University was the first unit of higher education to sign up, led by president and Hollywood stalwart Graham Spanier.
The JCHEEC recently issued a farcical ‘report’ boasting that at least 20 universities now have commercial online music sales companies selling to students - whether the students want it or not.
Educause also has a new blog (with material that’ll interest followers of the continuing Hollywood Invades US Universities and Gets Away With It saga) and an EDUCAUSE Live! feature, “a free, monthly, hour-long interactive Web seminar on critical information technology topics in higher education.”
Yesterday, blog handler Steve Worona interviewed Russ Vaught from Penn State and Chuck Powell from Yale and, “The similarities and differences are worth hearing about,” says Worona, continuing:
“At Yale, for example, the primary motivation for the project was allowing faculty to provide video and music to students for class work in an especially efficient way. ‘Entertainment’ was a bonus, and there’s a user charge to sign up for it. No subsidy. At Penn State, on the other hand, while academic use of their Napster system isn’t impossible, the driving force was President Graham Spanier’s goal to displace the KaZaAs and Groksters with an alternative authorized by the music industry. Streaming and tethered downloads are free to the consumer at Penn State, with funding derived in part from student activity fees.
“Another difference worth noting is support for Macintoshes: Yes at Yale, No at Penn State.”
He adds, “The archive of our 60-minute discussion is available online, along with Chuck’s and Russ’ slides.”

Well you say I should get to know you,… and I am not going to argue,… But it certainly is Extreemly Bogas to think a young girl will do for me,… what do you think I want and I am going to keep it honest with you so keep it straight with me,…. We will : ) And we believe EDUCAUSE is as much a victim of the entertainment industry as the school system - and all those students and their parents who are being taken for a ride.

Hello,….. I am at Mitchigan Ave. and Huron headed North down Mitchigan Ave. to the OLD WATER TOWER CIRCLE WHERE THE WISHING POOL IS AND THEN I AM CONTINUEING NORTH TO THE PARK ACROSS THE STREET FROM THE “DRAKE” ON LAKE SHORE DRIVE YOU KNOW WHERE OAK STREET TURNS INTO LAKE SHORE DRIVE ON THE EAST SIDE OF the street of Mitchigan Ave. I might be singing or rapping to raise up money, like a fund raiser for the immediate opportunity of having some good clean fun. Or I will be probally supporting the other artist that are preforming with incouraging words of moral support, or I will be there watching and just enjoying myself and keeping to myself sounds more than likely. That IS IT I WILL KEEP TO MYSELF I FEEL GOOD ABOUT THAT SO IT IS WHAT I WILL DO. OBEDIANCE TO GOD FALLS ON ME AND NOBODY UNDERSTANDS ME AND I AM DOING WHAT IS SOMEHOW BEST FOR ME, NATURALLY.
