Is ‘illegal’ file sharing ‘collapsing’?

p2pnet news view Music:- If Vivendi Universal, EMI, Warner Music and Sony Music’s BPI (British Phornographic Industry)  praises something, one has to wonder.

So when BPC guy Geoff Taylor is enthusiastic about claims made in a ‘report’ …

In this instance, “new research shows that the number of teenagers illegally sharing music has fallen dramatically in the past year,” says a story in The Guardian.

The headline?  “Collapse in illegal sharing and boom in streaming brings music to executives’ ears.”

Collapse in file sharing? Oh, really?

The story says the findings show, “many 14 to 18 year olds are now streaming music regularly,” and quotes Paul Brindley, CEO of Music Ally, “which carried out the survey with media and technology research company, The Leading Question,” as stating:

“These figures challenge the idea that filesharing will just continue to grow. While we don’t think for a second that it shows the war against piracy is won, it does at least suggest that there is encouraging news for the music industry.”

BPI spokesman Geoff Taylor says the figures are “absolutely encouraging” and,”The industry has worked hard to licence new services, they are great music discovery tools and a new way for artists to get paid and drive new sales.”

Ahem.

Anyway, less than a third of teenagers are now, “illegally downloading music, the survey suggests,” says The Guardian, going on:

“In January this year 26% of 14 to 18 year olds admitted filesharing at least once a month compared with 42% in December 2007.”

Many teenagers (65%), “are streaming music regularly, with more 14 to 18 year olds (31%) listening to streamed music on their computer every day compared with music fans overall (18%),” says the story.

But it confesses, the picture, “may be more complex than a simple shift from filesharing to streaming, with people sharing music in new ways such as via bluetooth technology, on blogs, and through copying, also known as ripping content from friends’ MP3 devices.”

Darknets, anyone?

And leave us not forget anything which can be heard (or seen) can easily be copied. And that includes streamed music. Or movies.

Moreover, a single report does not a conclusion make.

No need to stay tuned.

    Yup .. keyword ‘ Admitted’ .
14 to 18 year old always tell the truth in corporate surveys, when lawyers are
    circling their schools like vultures.

Then consider that a 500gb portable USB storage device goes for around 80.00US.

    Darknet ?

    rebirth of the ‘Sneakernet’.

This particular one is for the investors.

Whoever is investing in these companies of crook is stupid!

I read this article and was utterly disgusted. This is propaganda because usually propeganda is not checked by many people. Unfortunately
they accept it as face value and don’t think twice. Filesharing has not stopped or slowed in reality, there are more options than ever before.
Perhapse those vpn lines are doing their job so that deep packet inspection can’t see whats in those packets? haahaa! Cartels, you all need
to give up already and die.

  8. GuruOfReason Says:

Even if filesharing is falling, is this translating into higher music sales? I would highly doubt it since most of today’s music sucks.
