The Far North living lab: streaming movies
p2pnet news view | P2P | Movies:- Tribler was developed by Dutch researchers as a network for a new generation of p2p file sharing with faster down- and uploading —- and live video streaming.
“Instead of the lone hacker, for the first time, it was written by a team of more than a dozen scientists,” Johan Pouwelse, one of the group, told p2pnet at the time.
Tribler came about under the I-Share project of the Delft University of Technology’s Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science and recently, “The Far North Living Lab started by the Northern Research Institute (Norut) aims to create a platform for digital creativity,” says TorrentFreak.
The lab kicked off with a, “spectacular experiment in which they used the (EU funded) Tribler BitTorrent client to stream a 2K resolution film onto the big screen,” it says, going on:
“The lab’s launch was held at a local movie theater where the film ‘Carved’ by Jonas Rejman was projected, with consent from the copyright holder of course. To our knowledge this is a digital streaming world premiere for BitTorrent, and one that shows how the technology can actually help digital cinema and independent filmmakers.”

A living lab is a collection of people, equipment, services and technology to provide a test platform for research and experiments. The Far North Living Lab has a main focus on digital media and distribution to reflect the very creative environment found in the North of Norway.
The lab will provide basic services to all projects that use it, like high speed network connectivity, data storage, P2P distribution technology and so on. It will also provide infrastrcture to share knowledge, announce events or projects and communicate with interested parties.
Far North experiments will be funded as part of given projects and anyone who believes s/he has interesting idea should get in touch, it says, pointing out existing projects and experiments are listed in the wiki, the place for potential contributors.
“While we seek to keep costs at a minimum, it is necessary for the lab to have some funding,” says Far North, adding:
“We are open for commercial partners and projects to provide both money, equipment or services to the lab.”
Looks good, and the hope would be the lab will steer clear of restrictive corporate collaborations which might do more to tie it up, than encourage, a free flow of ideas and projects.
Stay tuned.
