“In May, the Linyi Fourth People’s Hospital’s came under fire after an article published in the China Youth Daily revealed that the hospital had been using electric shock therapy to treat Internet addiction. Yesterday, the Ministry of Health ordered a stop to the practice, stating that the treatment’s safety has not been proven.

“Yang Shuyun, a hospital official, replied that the hospital had already stopped using the treatment in response to intense media pressure.”

Meanwhile, the “government-funded Daxing centre, run by an army colonel under the Beijing Military Hospital, is one of a handful of clinics treating patients with Internet addictions in China,” said a 2007 Reuters story, quoted in China Daily, from whence came the pic.

“Combining sympathy with discipline,” the military-style boot camp near Beijing, “is at the front-line of China’s battle against Internet addiction, a disorder afflicting millions of the nation’s youth,” said the sotry, adding:

“The Internet Addiction Treatment Centre (IATC) in Daxing county uses a blend of therapy and military drills to treat the children of China’s nouveau riche addicted to online games, Internet pornography, cybersex and chats.”

This is really funny. They’re worried about a hospital using electric shocks to treat net “addiction”, but they look the other way while hundreds of followers of Falun Gong are tortured to death. Yeah, that makes sense…
