Microsoft scores with vomit advert

p2pnet news view Advertising | Cool | P2P:- It seems almost a foregone conclusion a Microsoft Internet Explorer advert would do well when associated with vomit.

Lots of vomit.

Featuring a husband, wife and ex-Superman Dean Cain fallen on hard times — or maybe not, given Microsoft was paying — the technicolour yawn ad was, “slipped online and was pulled shortly afterward, as some people thought watching a housewife throwing up in the kitchen after seeing something untoward on her husband’s laptop was not entirely edifying,” says CNet News.

In the minute-long item, Cain, “fronts a spoof public information film highlighting the features of the new software,” says The Guardian, continuing:

“The scene shows a woman who discovers an offensive website on her husband’s browser, the contents of which cause her to vomit three times. Cain suggests Internet Explorer’s privacy options mean that users will never have to suffer from what he calls OMGIGP – ‘Oh My God, I’m Gonna Puke’ syndrome – ever again.

“But after widespread disgust at the graphic nature of the ad, Microsoft has pulled the advertisement.”

However, “before the creative could be removed, fans of the video copied and reposted it,” says the Visible Measures,  going on:

“These copies have subsequently driven the majority of the views and media coverage for the campaign, enough even to grab third place in our Ad Age Viral Video Chart last week.

“The O.M.G.I.G.P. assets have generated more than 10% of the campaign’s footprint, over half of the campaign’s views (see the chart above), and nearly 60% of the campaign’s commentary.”

Could it be Microsoft has finally figured it out?

Or was it just a fluke?

MS hired this dude who worked with Apple in 2006 to create their awesome ad campaign and this is what they get?

I read the article about a year ago in Business Week, so I can’t remember the advertising company, but he’s known for pushing the boundaries.
