Rogers version of 404 helper

p2pnet news view | Advertising:-Comcast isn’t the only major ISP trying to sucker users.

Yesterday, “you know when you get those pesky `404 not found` errors?” – we posted, going on Comcast,  will instead help direct your Web browser to an easy-to-use page with suggestions and links to get you back on track”.

We also provide a seamless search experience on this page, which is powered by Yahoo!, so you can find relevant search information, or simply perform another search.

And also ‘find’ a whole bunch of ads you didn’t want and didn’t ask for.

“This is EXACTLY what rogers is doing,” said Adam Reimer in a comment post, going on:

“I have their portable modem (not so portable BTW), and even with regular rogers service, if you go to any website that does not have custom 404 pages, they redirect you to their ad-infested page. Your ‘opt-out’ doesent do anything.

“It just changes the page it redirects you to.”

Rogers? Engaged in something sneaky like that? Surely not ….

But (sigh) Adam is correct.

But

to “opt out” you have to click “learn more about this page” at the bottem, then select this link:   http://ww20.search.rogers.com/options?choice=none

When you do that, and then go to a page that would give you a 404, it looks like a standard I.E 404 page, but it’s still a rogers page (locatied here: http://ww20.search.rogers.com/not_found)

Heres a screencap of the non-ad-infested page: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=3052098&id=501702789

Notice how the images don’t show up? It’s a half-assed attempt to make it look like they are not interfering. Mind you, this is a cookie that is set in the browser. As i switch between FF, IE, and Chrome regularly for web development, if i mistype an address on my website, i get one of those two pages, and if i clear my cookies, they come right back. Annoying as hell.

Stay tuned.

(Cheers, Adam)

^- i should also note that rogers does not credit you for any revenue gained by your “failed DNS lookups” (Try submitting google.com 10 times (not refreshing) and see if you get the rogers page. Yes, i got their ads page for google)

I’ve noticed this, even with http://www.p2pnet.net and http://www.matthewgood.org.
