Microsoft: ‘Now let’s talk about Apple’
p2pnet news view | Advertising:- “Apple may have some of the most interesting online ads we’ve seen in a while, but Microsoft’s recent push to paint the competitor as pricey is starting to work …”
What ! ? Apple ? Pricey ?
Nooooooooooo!
The quote is the intro to an Advertising Age story which in turn draws from a BrandIndex chart.
“The perceptions of value the two brands offer has shifted dramatically in the eyes of 18- to 34-years-olds since Microsoft began running its ‘Laptop Hunters’ campaign in late March,” says the story, noting:
“Apple’s value perception has fallen considerably, while Microsoft’s has risen.”
And it gets even more interesting.
Allison Watson (right) is Microsoft’s corporate VP for its worldwide partners group and during a company conference in New Orleans, yesterday, she joyously revealed just how much the Microsoft adverts have upset Apple.
“Now let’s talk about Apple,” she says, continuing »»»
… so we’ve been running these PC value ads. Just giving people saying, hey, what are you looking to spend? Oh, I’m looking to spend less than $1,000. Well we’ll give you $1,000. Go in and look and see what you can buy. And they come out and they just show them. Those are completely unscripted commercials.
And you know why I know they’re working?
Because two weeks ago we got a call from the Apple legal department saying, hey — this is a true story — saying, “Hey, you need to stop running those ads, we lowered our prices.”
They took like $100 off or something.
It was the greatest single phone call in the history that I’ve ever taken in business. (Applause.)
She adds, “I did cartwheels down the hallway. At first I said, ‘Is this a joke? Who are you?’ Not understanding what an opportunity.
“And so we’re just going to keep running them and running them and running them.”
(Cheers, YKW)

“…a Ferarri DOES cost more than a Volkswagon.”
Uh huh.
And it also costs more to insure, run, maintain, and gas up, and it kinda sucks on ordinary, city streets.
…What’s your point?!?

But mac are prettier than pc

Well lets face it: Apple is pricy, and thats why Micro$ofts campaign is doing so well. Im sure many people are thinking (Especially in these times of crisis). “What do I get for my bucks”? Is this Mac REALLY worth all that money? Now I wont start a debat Mac vs. WinPcs here, but its a fact that designers, musicians, and pros have used Mac for years, not only because Mac offers ease of use, but because its fast and stable as well. (So they say! Dont flame me!) On the other hand, WinPcs are now as good as McOs, so today its more a personal choice what to choose…

true, a Ferarri tune=up costs 50,000, while a volkswagen goes 50,000 between oil changes.
either way, you can’t wear it around your neck on a friday night…
while not actually being a ‘fanboy’ of mac, I do own several. I just like to go outside and start the car every morning and have it work, so I bought a reliable car.. same idea with my computer…

Now what happens when Ubuntu starts running ads? There’s always a bigger fish–or in this case, a cheaper fish.

Do those that make the best products become the wealthiest? Proponents of (monopoly) capitalism seem to think so. But consider this:
Bill Gates is the world’s number 1 billionaire. Yet the reason for his enormous financial wealth is due mostly to the most unstable, the most unreliable and the most insecure-malware prone operating system on the market today (of the major 3: OSX,Windows and *nix systems).
I’ve found that the absolute cheapest of operating systems (Linux in my case – free to download and install) to be far more stable than Windows, far more reliable, and light years more secure than any OS His Gateness Who art at Microsoft has EVER come up with.
As for Macs, they are pricey for sure but they are also based on the open source Free BSD Unix which gives them the stability and security that Windows computers will never have.

“As for Macs, they are …based on the open source Free BSD Unix which gives them the stability and security that Windows computers will never have.”
Horseshit!
While OSX (not simply “Macs”) was “based on” Unix, that’s as far as it goes. The operating system still executes everything inside the kernel just like Windows, and therefore, has the same vulnerabilities, and demonstrates the same penchant for crashing and freezing as Windows.
I work with all 3 types of systems.
I’ve had to reconfigure or reboot just as many Macs due to the same BS as Windows suffers from.
That “Unix stability” you talk of, is only found in the Real McCoy.

im sory devils advicate but im going 2 hav 2 let every 1 know 1 secret every linux user hides , finding drivers 4 every freaking thing gets old very, Very, VEry, VERy, VERY quickly so it may be small but hd’s r cheeper now and it may be more secure but that is because ther is no freakin simple file system , loose a file aka , save a file in the wrong place and its pretty much gone and for the inal speed argument i can boot up linux just as fast as vista , u just need a system built about a year after the os first came out and its fast

@apez:
Since I can’t understand what you’re trying to say, I won’t even bother to ask you why you mentioned me.
