Canada Facebook probe results online today
p2pnet news view Advertising | P2P:- A little more than a year ago p2pnet ran a post centering on a detailed CIPPIC analysis of social advertising site Fa$ebook’s privacy policies, conducted by Canadian law students.
CIPPIC (Canadian Internet Policy and Public Interest Clinic) found the claims weren’t justfied, calling on privacy commissioner Jennifer Stoddart to, “investigate possible violations of Canadian privacy laws,” we said.
Today, the commissioner releases the results of her examination.
“We’re confident the commissioner’s report will provide the entire social networking community with guidance on how to operate in a manner that respects Canadians’ privacy rights,” says clinic acting director David Fewer.
He says CIPPIC’s objectives in filing the complaint were »»»
- First, to ensure that new and innovative social networking services develop in a manner that respects Canadian privacy law; and,
- Second, to ensure that Facebook users have more knowledge of and control over the manner in which social networking sites and their partner advertisers and third party application developers collect, use and disclose their personal information.
The report will be online today at 9 am Eastern, and 6:00 am Pacific, from http://www.priv.gc.ca/index_e.cfm (English) and http://www.priv.gc.ca/index_f.cfm (French).
Stoddart and assistant privacy commissioner Elizabeth Denham will also be hosting a media briefing, with time for questions, at 11 am Eastern at 112 Kent Street, 3rd Floor, Ottawa.
Stay tuned.
