DRM is Dead, Part Duex

p2pnet news view | DRM:- In an absolute all time failure, unbelievably wealthy Hollywood Borg, (Time Warner, Viacom, Fox, Sony, NBC Universal and Disney) fought for almost 6 years until they finally decided on the DRM Regionable platform for BD-ROM (commonly known as Blu-Ray for the laser color used in reading this media).

From 2000 until Feburary of 2006 the arguments and fur flew, choosing between DVD, HD-DVD, UDO (Ultra Density Optical), DVR Blue, and on and on and on. Hollydud finally conceded to a format and Sony (the technical arm, not the movie) and Pioneer finalized the technology. Honestly this reads more like something you would see on a middle school playground concerning kids and marbles.

Now the fighting is over, the first mass produced Blu-Ray player wasn’t released until mid June of 2006, when in fact, the Blu-Ray Disc Association which included technology companies: Sony, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Thomson, LG (Lucky GoldStar) Electronics, Hitachi, Sharp, and Samsung was created in May of 2002.

This new DRM includes 3, count them, 3 types of DRM; AACS, BD+, and BD-ROM, (I won’t get into specifications as it has been pointed out that my articles are too ‘techy’. Feel free to search wiki for these terms for a more detailed breakdown.) and was being touted as the catch-all-beat-all in encryption that would last for a minimum of 5 years.

Not six months later, muslix64 posts that he has circumvented the Advanced Access Content System (AACS format), and, get this, he doesn’t even own a Blu-Ray player.

So, after beellions and beellions of dollars in research, organization of every major movie industry and technology producer to ensure that this new DRM would be unhackable and last for a minimum of 5 years, it was circumvented in less than 6 months, taking the hacker only a couple of weeks to figure out how to bypass it, and he didn’t even have the hardware to work with, and I quote;

‘I was not aware of anyone having done that, so I did. BackupHDDVD is a tool to decrypt a AACS protected movie that you own, so you can play it back later using an HDDVD player software.’

This will always be the way of things. The Kontent Kartels will continue to spend billions of dollars in research and development, only to be thwarted by some kid with too much time on his hands.

I would call this an epic fail in implementing DRM, I hope ‘The Joker’ is reading this because I would only ask him one question.

‘Why bother?’

DRM really stands for ‘it Doesn’t Really Matter’.

    At least SOME of the game companies are getting it.

    X3: the reunion used to have the Starforce cp system.
    My recently purchased X3:R 2.0 no longer has any cp on it, and
    patches for earlier versions remove the previously installed Starforce system.

    Too bad the Movie and Music industry won’t wise up.

    “I won’t get into specifications as it has been pointed out that my articles are too ‘techy’…”

    I don’t think you should limit yourself, just because the great unwashed are too ignorant to understand. I constantly see technical explanations dumbed down everywhere and it’s really annoying.

    Please put in as much as you want and feel is necessary to explain the point properly and let people go educate themselves. You can always put links to further explanations of the techy stuff, too.

    I personally don’t bother cracking the DRM, I just boycott the product entirely – and Big Fucking Media is totally powerless to stop me. :)

    DRM = Doesn’t Really Matter. I like it.

    DRM = dead rights management.

    I think it could be beneficial to dumb down your articles not only for the inexperienced readers that may come across this but also to keep the trolls who read this in the dark just so they cant follow every copyright forum and think they have the upper hand. Surfer has some truly unique articles and if I was a member of some anti-p2p organization, Id be using it to my benefit. Some secrets are better left secrets until when absolutely necessary… like when the anti-p2p try and sue blueray copying software into the ground. THEN you pull the technical card. Keep the poker face, don’t let everyone know your hand.

    Rules 1 & 2 of Fight Club come to mind.

  4. surfer Says:

    thanks for the feedback Cynix and lando calrissian, I know I cannot please everyone, but I am trying different levels of ‘techy’ to try and find a decent balance. This article was about a 5, neutral, I think I will move up to a 6 for my next post.

    @lando:

    Not sure where you’re going here.

    “…dumb down your articles …”

    This subject has already been beaten to death.
    Surfer is P2Pnet’s technical advisory admin.
    This is, technically, “technical stuff” we’re talking about.

    I’m not sure what you would have him do?
    He’s already deliberately trying to keep the “super-geeky” stuff out of it, for the benefit of a few.
    Even if you could “dumb it down”, many of us wouldn’t find that very useful, or very interesting, now would we?.

    “Keep the poker face, don’t let everyone know your hand.”

    Surfer’s not showing his hand.
    Everything he’s saying here is already widely-available knowledge.
    Do you really think he’d let anything out here that would tip the wrong people off?

  6. Devil's Advocate Says:

    @surfer:

    Personally, I think you should just “be yourself”, and write as you normally would.
    What good is a post from a technical advisor, if he has to omit “all things tech” from his writing??

    P2Pnet also has (of course) Jon, Henry, Ottawa Gal, and others (and even occassionally myself) posting.
    That’s a pretty wide variety of “voicing styles” going on there.
    That’s part of what this site is all about.

    “Dumb it down”???
    Absolutely not!!
    Don’tcha dare!
    ;)

  7. lando calrissian Says:

    you took 3 words out of context.
    When I meant dumbing it down I didn’t mean any more than he did in this article sorry it wasn’t criticism it was supposed to be: this is perfect dont give out ne unecessairy details type opinion. I respect and even look for at times, surfers opinion.

    usually I agree with your comments DA.

  8. surfer Says:

    my next post is now up to a 7…

    keep the feedback coming guys…

  9. Devil's Advocate Says:

    @lando:

    I’m not out to offend.
    I actually didn’t take any words out of context, as I actually meant I’m not at all in favour of “dumbing down” any technical journalism. People learn more when you give them the whole story.

    It’s sort of like being in another country and learning their language – when you devote yourself to the task of listening to it and trying to speak it, it comes to you much more effectively than any “second language class” in school. Sure, some of it is “over your head” for a little while, but constant exposure to it cures that.

  10. surfer Says:

    @Devil’s Advocate

    English is my second language

    :)

  11. Cynix Says:

    “English is my second language”

    You speak it better than many English people speak their only language.

    Ramp up the tech to 11/10, coz I’m a hardcore techy!

    Also, I can relate to your sockit-to-em style as I’m kinda like that myself. You may have heard of the reporter Charlie Demerjian, who writes for The Inquirer and also has own news site, Semi Accurate. His nvidia rants are the best. :)

  12. surfer Says:

    thanks..

  13. Devil's Advocate Says:

    @surfer:

    Don’t get me wrong…
    I’m not saying “lose” all the non-techies by talking over their heads.
    I’m saying let’s do what we can to help as many people who are interested to understand what’s humanly possible for them.

    The more knowledge shared, the stronger the cause.

    One of the first things that should be taught is that people should ASK QUESTIONS whenever a topic starts to “get away” from them.
