Speak out on copyright!

p2pnet news view | P2PPolitics:- The 2009 Copyright consultation has already attracted considerable interest with hundreds of comments posted on official discussion forum, two roundtables, and several hundred followers of the official consultation Twitter feed.

Yesterday I posted my short answer to the consultation and starting tomorrow I plan to begin a lengthy blog series that discusses key issues in greater detail.

To help facilitate greater participation throughout the consultation process, today I am launching SpeakOutOnCopyright.ca.

The site features dozens of posts and videos on Canadian copyright law, the Twitter #copycon stream, information on Bill C-61, and a Take Action page that highlights the ways individual Canadians can speak out on copyright.

You have to applaud people like Michael Geist.
He can’t be sleeping a whole lot these days, judging by all the places his name’s appearing.

But, just when you think he’s pushed it as far as anyone can, he comes up with another way for the Public to try and reclaim some more of its lost power!

    Kudos to you, Dr. Geist!

Following Michael Geist’s call, I submitted a proposal to them. Here’s a small part :

[...] I think you will receive many proposals during these audiences, but as far as I’m concerned, Canada has a unique chance to position itself as a leader in cultural preservation by allowing museums such as mine to do their job : that is to make historical software / games available, free without worrying for copyrights on material that – anyway – is not being sold anymore. Additionally, the 50-year optional protection would guarantee that no commercial rights are being offended and would insure a fair protection for companies who actually want that protection. I would say that the state of the current law is one of presumption – we presume that the authors actually want that 50 years protection. I would be surprised that this presumption is verified in most cases.
