Harry Potter and the Night Vision Googles

p2pnet news view | P2P | Movies:- Security guards in Germany are using night vision goggles in theaters showing Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince to find camcorders.

Ooooooooo!

So says Janko Roettgers in NewTeeVee.

Night vision goggles in theaters?

A while back we wondered if Hollywood’s MPAA (Motionless Picture Association of America) was having NVGs specially developed for two of its hottest super snoopers — Lucky and Flo (right).

After showing people to their seats, trained ushers are strapping on the goggles and scanning darkened cinemas around the country to spot anyone trying to make illegal copies of movies with hand-held video recorders or mobile phones, said Reuters at the time.

The rumour that the MPAA was having special night vision goggles developed for Lucky and Flo, the (in)famous digital sniffer dogs with the uncanny ability, according to the studios, to be able to find dodgy disks by mere odour alone, shouldn`t necessarily be discounted, said p2pnet.

Be that as it may, the night vision goggles effort was very successful according to the MPA`s Malaysia manager, Nor Hayati Yahaya, told Reuters.

In Germany, “This isn`t the first time Warner has tried to protect Harry with peeping Toms,” says NewTeeVee, going on:

“UK audiences were subjected to a similar treatment in 2004 to prevent the recording of The Prisoner of Azkaban. The measures caused quite a stir back then, and German Potter fans and privacy advocates are equally upset this time around. German officials have already announced that they plan to investigate Warner`s measures.

“One theater-goer compared the presence of the night vision-equipped security guards to the former Eastern German Stasi secret police. Another confronted the theater owner about it and was told that this was done on behalf of the film`s distributor, Warner Pictures.”

Meanwhile, why all the fuss? – one wonders.

Warner has already made lots of dosh out of the movie, which doesn’t amount to much more than a love story, and a boring one at that.

Well – they have done a pretty bad job… I can easily get hold of German cams and TS copies via usenet (and I would guess torrents)!

It makes no difference what the industry tries – most sources come from within the industry themselves anyway.. Until they stop their corrupt ways, they only serve to encourage more of the same!

Bring a flashlight. Bright light and night vision don’t go too well. :)

I say bring a infrared light. That will really reak havoc with nightvision goggles. ;-)

I wonder if we’ll be hearing that excessive use of night vision goggles cause cancer a few years down the road…..that’d be sweet.
